5.0 out of 5 stars Not your typical release, 21 April 2008
I was so happy when I found Epica had released an album like this. The group is a big fan of film music and I think you can tell from all of their albums that they are and that this influences them. This CD, though, is not just influenced by film music but is directly in the genre of such greats as Hans Zimmer, John Williams, Horner, etc. Personally I think it stands up there with the best of these composers. It's varied - from epic and dramatic to mellow or pensive - it's got everything. The hardcore metal fans who cry if they don't hear some death growls will not be pleased with this of course, as it's not guitar driven or vocal - it's a totally different genre. And yet the spirit of Epica is very much in it. If you are a fan and want to try something a little different and original, then I'd highly, highly recommend this.5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Experience, 1 Feb 2007
This review is from: Score: An Epic Journey (Audio CD)
Having just purchased Epica after checking out the sound clips on the band's website, I was not disappointed! This is primarily an orchestral work and as with other similar titles (Nightwish, Evanescence etc) lumping it in the Metal category - which most people still associate with the likes of Motorhead or Megadeth - does it a dis-service.

The band has two previous releases which are more Rock/Metal based but that's no reason not to like The Score. Epica say in the accompanying sleeve notes their inspiration is composers such as Hans Zimmer. You will certainly find similarities here and there is also a strong resemblance to Christopher Franke, particularly his Babylon 5 era.

My only slight complaint is that although there are 20 tracks on the CD, some are quite short at just over a minute in length. However that does not detract from what is a magnificent aural experience.

Whatever your musical tstes, you will not be disappointed with The Score.
