Product Description

Product Description
The world's most renowned volcanologist mysteriously disappears after a lecture on geophysical catastrophes. Two policemen are found brutally executed on the steps of London's nearby Albert Hall. Then, Mount St Helen's suddenly and inexplicably erupts in Washington State, leaving a wake of death and destruction. The new, liberal administration in the White House ignores these apparent coincidences, but the retired Admiral Morgan, former National Security Adviser to the President, and Lt. Jimmy Ramshawe are shocked into action. Only a missile, launched from a nuclear submarine, could have had the power to blow up the volcano. Is this the fabled HAMAS terrorist, Major Ray Kerman, at work again? Their suspicions are quickly confirmed by a HAMAS ultimatum: Total military evacuation of the Middle East or the terrible threat of a mega-tsunami - the greatest tidal wave in 4000 years of world history. Both men know immediately what that means: the volcano Cumbre Vieja, glowering over the island La Palma in the Canaries. A nuclear missile, such as Kerman's brand-new, state-of-the-art Scimitar SL-2, launched straight at the heart of the volcano would explode the mountain into the Atlantic ocean and send a tidal wave towards the East Coast of the United States, at 400 miles an hour, with waves 150 feet high. Resolutely, the Pentagon refuses to buckle and Admiral Morgan is swept back into the White House to implement Operation High Tide - a desperate race to evacuate the East Coast and locate the nuclear submarine before it launches its deadly weapon.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just horrible, 28 Jul 2004
By N. Brett (Wiltshire, England) - See all my reviews

I know, I know, I've seen the positive response to the previous review and I realise that I am going to get slaughtered here, but....
The author's first three novels were pretty good and I have continued to buy his stuff in the hope that he returns to his previous standards, but this book was awful on so many levels.
This is written with a very right wing slant with much scorn poured on weak lefties by the main characters who are all senior in the US military. In essence Hamas have a nuclear sub and they are wandering around the oceans using missiles to initiate volcanic eruptions. The plan is to cause a massive eruption that will cause a tidal wave to take out much of America's west coast.
Somewhere in here is a good story trying to get out,but ends up an turgid mix of descriptions of volcanos, submarine travel and the military being more patriotic and smarter then anyone else! But there is so much more that is wrong, amazing co-incidences (Admiral Morgan 'happens' to be on a volcano on holiday when Hamas are there), lack of logic (why did Hamas hold the US to ransom, knowing that they would refuse, why not just blow the volcano?!) and some horrible right wing views (the 'good' guys force a coup in the US to get rid of the 'weak leftie' president!). It is all nicely summed up when, in a discussion with the French president, Morgan (having got what he wanted) reminds him that if it was not for the US he 'would be speaking German"!
It is not as if the story and action is good enough to make up for all this.
Avoid or just enjoy yourself by flinging unhelpful votes at me. Trust me, there is so much better out there....

5.0 out of 5 stars Admiral Morgan is back in the White House !!!, 25 May 2004
By S. D. Mowbray "mattymoo4" (Lincolnshire UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having followed the adventures of Admiral Morgan and various submarine based foes over the years, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this title.

Anyone who has enjoyed Patrick Robinson's earlier works will enjoy this, his latest novel. This time, his arch foe, the ex-SAS Major, Ray Kerman truly has the world in his sights with a planned mega tsunami triggered by nuclear tipped cruise missiles aimed at a volcano.

Nobody writes modern naval techno thrillers better than Robinson. Clancy, Dimercurio and Woods simply cannot hold a candle to this work. Set in the present it is a believable piece of fiction but on a breathtaking scale.

Roll on the next installment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, 28 Mar 2005
By O. Doyle "celticshedevil" (Ireland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I enjoyed Baracuda 945 to a point but got a bit bored with all the Navy jargon. Nonetheless I decided to give Mr Robinson another go when I purchased Scimitar SL-2 and I have to say.....I'm glad I did. This is a truly excellent page-turner that kept me up until the early hours. The antics of Admiral Morgan are amusing as always and the whole 'will they / won't they' kept me engrossed until the very end. Lets hope Admiral Morgan hasn't really retired!!!
