I was disapointed with this kit as a whole. As I have seen and used the contents of other kits with my children this one did not rate well. The large brightly coloured box is about the best part. Of course parts of it can't be faulted, but the magnifying glass is tiny and the microscope (which was my motivation for bying this kit) is next to useless.
The instruction leaflet is ok but not very child friendly as inspiration or explanation of what might be a achieved with the kit.

Useless Toy 10 Feb 2010
By Geo.
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
Like the previous reviewer, I think the colourful box is the most attractive feature of this kit. The microscope is useless and poorly made, the magnifying glass is truly tiny and most of the experiments require extra things. For example, the attractive rainbow disc on the box requires a number of different food colourings from the kitchen -- if the shops are shut over Christmas, bad luck if you do not possess the necessary variety of colours.
The sensible advice of not tasting any of the liquids once the solids are dissolved (you supply, but they are in most kitchens) is fine, but as the kit does not contain the 5 essential glasses (plates for some others), there is a temptation for the child to use those from the kitchen.
The experiments are very basic in the extreme and not enough of essential materials like the litmus paper is provided. The instructions are exclusively written for the adult supervising and did little to engage the child.
A very disappointing present and one that is highly unlikely to inspire any child to "learn to think like a scientist"!

WASTE OF MONEY 29 Sep 2010
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
What more can I say? This kit would be expensive at half the price for what you get. My child is 5 years old and science mad, searched all the kits for something for his age. Most disappointing. If you want a microscope spend the money on that instead and look up the experiment ideas on the internet!
