Usborne always get a "thumbs-up" from me and this is no exception. 50 Science Things to Make & Do came home from the library with my son about a month ago (the spiral bound book, not the cards). He's seven, gifted, and a Mythbusters junkie, so although the experiments in here are pretty basic and easy (plus they don't go boom, explode, catch on fire or create flying objects, much to his dismay) he's had a great time being his own boss and reporting his findings to me whether I sit nearby or am involved with him. I can't see any danger factor and there seems to be minimal mess potential (cornstarch, water, marshmallows, pepper, milk, oil, food coloring are some of the ingredients). Several of the experiments are edible and several involve bugs (yippee!). This is a fantastic book for budding investigators and a great addition to any future scientist's collection.
