Readings in the science and religion debate
By Howard A. Jones
The editors of this volume are all Professors of Divinity at the University of Durham, England. They are therefore in an authoritative position to select, under 16 headings, extracts from various textbooks relating to this topic written by experts respectively presenting their own views. The selection of material is very even-handed, with the views of passionate Christian writers like Thomas Torrance and Alister McGrath, through scientifically trained theologians like John Polkinghorne, to apologists for intelligent design like Michael Behe, to scientists like Stephen Jay Gould (biology) and Paul Davies (physics).
Any theology student, or any layman interested in the science and religion debate, will find this a highly readable, fascinating and useful monograph. It gives readers the opportunity to become familiar with the views of writers in the field, some of whose names may not be familiar to them, so that they can follow up with a reading of the whole text from which these extracts were taken. There is a quite expansive bibliography of further readings relevant to the Introduction and the four main chapter headings - Conflict or complement, God and modern physics, Creation through evolution and A designer world. There are also indexes of subjects and authors for easy reference. Thoroughly recommended!
