"Who are the bluetones?"...,

...is a comment I'm hearing far too much. Last year I was in a music store trying to get hold of their latest single, and one of the staff said, "The bluetones? I didn't know they were still about." And that was coming from someone who really should know their stuff. What I'm trying to say, is that the bluetones should be the biggest band in the world, what with their sheer unadulterated talent, and yet their commercial success is severely limited. Science and nature is an amazing album, although I reckon one or two tracks are less than perfect, which is unusual for the bluetones (I'm not a fan of autophilia, or one or two of the slow plinky ones). It's not as good as expecting to fly (what could be?) but is better than their second album, return to the last chance saloon, as it is a return to more uplifting tunes, which was always the bluetones' string point. The great tunes include mudslide (a scathing attack on the media and success of manufactured bands, though you wouldn't know it to listen to), zorrro, which rocks, and home fires, which is very moving. Again, the bluetones use contrasts with uplifting lyrics set to dark music and vice versa - I love this aspect of the bluetones. The lyrics are deep and require a lot of thought (eg mudslide, and Emily's pine, which seems on first listen to be a love song, but turns out to be about a murder. "carve my name in Emily's spine"). If this is the first bluetones album you're thinking of buying, buy expecting to fly instead. If you're already a fan, you won't be disappointed by this slice of genius. A varied thoughtful album with rocking guitars interspersed with moving ballads.

A British band that aren't miserable? Yep, its The Bluetones,

This band really ought to be huge. Just the fact that they have survived the post-Britpop massacre speaks volumes about The Bluetones. While dodgy indie bands like er, Dodgy, Kula Shaker etc have fallen by the wayside these lads have lived on. The simple reason? GOOD SONGS! 'Science & Nature' carries on their proud tradition of writing quality guitar songs. One of the stand out things for me about this album is the bass guitar(played so well by Scott Morris). So many of todays bands neglect our 4 string friend(come on JJ72 might aswell be a 2 piece). Scott Morris however provides some of the albums best moments, just look at 'Mudslide' for instance. Another astonishing thing about this album is the fact that its not miserable! Most of the good indie albums this year(Doves, Coldplay, JJ72 etc) make you want to slit your wrists. The Bluetones make you want to smile and think about how great life really is. Quite simply put they have a sense of humor (this was illustrated in the summer with 'Officer & A Gentleman' finish to sets).So, should you buy 'Science & Nature'? Yes because it'll brighten up your day.

Having only heard Autophilia and Kepp the Home Fires Burning, I was quite surprised to hear the rest of the album. Most of the songs ae potentially brilliant, but are spoiled. My favourite song, Slack Jaw, has far too much instrumental, but is beautifully haunting none the less. Zorro, for example, could do without the crashy squealy guitars. You should probably start with Return to the Last Chance Saloon, but buy this anyway.
