I came across Karl Kruszelnicki by accident when I fell asleep listening to a cd/radio. He is on Radio 5's "science phone-in" at about 2am on Thursdays and is compulsive listening. From the Web, we learn that Karl is or was a "physicist, labourer, roadie for bands, car mechanic, filmmaker, hospital lab. technician, biomedical engineer, TV weatherman and hospital medic". He's collected numerous degrees so I just assumed that, from his instant explanations of all things scientific to radio listeners, he must have a PhD too (apparently not). People have said to me "he's just using Google", but I think they'd change their minds if they actually listened to him and appreciated his love of science.
If 2am is an unearthly time (as it is for most), check Karl out on iPlayer (then you'll want his books).
