Product Description

Synopsis

Science fiction gives us different perspectives on our lives and the world, and allows us to escape from the present. For these reasons, the genre has attracted a huge and devoted audience worldwide. Dealing with the history of science fiction from its earliest beginnings to its latest developments, "The Encyclopaedia of Science Fiction" is a visual reference book on this subject. It shows how the future has been envisioned by science fiction writers and illustrators throughout the decades, and the influences that shaped their visions. It also traces the history of science fiction against the background of its times, through decade-by-decade time charts that cover books, magazines, films and historical events. Each chart is followed by a visual exploration of the major concerns of that decade.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb visual SF encyclopedia 5 May 2010
Format:Hardcover
Superb encyclopedia of SF. A visual feast, especially for the fan of paperbacks; fantasy small press books such as Gnome; old SF classics. Good coverage of SF authors and their most famous works. If you want more details, more about sub genres, more about the authors, then the encyclopedia of science fiction is probably your best bet at 1200 pages or so, but for sheer visual information, this book is hard to beat.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book! 7 Oct 2004
By RAMON
Format:Hardcover
European readers of SF are used to be considered mentally handicaped or teenagers full of spots. This book is a vindication of SF as a genre, and also as literature. The author describes SF as any other kind of literature, with a historical, cultural and social background. Points out its merits not only as SF genre, but as literary works as well.
This book is an authoritative source for all those who like SF: more than 100 authors, cross references to films, tv series, magazines, historical events.... All is full of wonderful plates of first editions, old engravings of proto SF, etc... This book is clever, but is also fun.
Buy it if you want to enjoy a clever enjoyment, and it will give you thousands of reading tips. One wonders if the author has had time to read all those thousands of pages, see those films?
I'll pore a bit more in the 50's.

3.0 out of 5 stars WARNING 20 Sep 2012
Format:Hardcover
please note some of the reviews are not for this book as this book is John Clute's book "Science Fiction The Illustrated Encyclopedia" with 312 pages. not the The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction by John Clute and Peter Nicholls's which has about 1408 pages ISBN-13: 978-1857238976. I write this as it is obvious that some peaple are getting the two mixed up hope this helps
