Product Description

Review

One of the most original and thought-provoking contributions to genuinely Islamic thought in the past half-century. --James Morris, Professor and Chair of Islamic Studies at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter

William Chittick is the most exciting writer on Sufism today, combining as he does a genuine passion for the subject with a scholarly objectivity that is truly impressive. --Ravi Ravindra, author of Science and the Sacred and Professor Emeritus, Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada

Product Description

With academic courses either encouraging commercialism, or cultivating zealots, Chittick states that it is impossible to understand classical Islamic texts without the years of contemplative study that are anathema to the modern education system. Insisting upon a return to the ways of the ancient wisdom tradition, which saw the quest for knowledge of the soul, the world, and God as a unifying spiritual discipline, Chittick maintains that the study of Islamic texts cannot be treated separately from self-understanding. Fascinating, radical, and a true challenge to modern trends in academic study, this book opens a new debate in Islamic thought.

'Desert Island' title 10 Aug 2010
By Fizza
Format:Paperback
If I had to create a shortlist for that mythical trip to a desert island, this would be the first book I'd grab. Not only does it, apparently, contain a very concise overview of Sufi philosophy (of which I know very little... I am still trying to absorb Al Ghazali via osmosis from my bedside table), it contains incredibly practical wisdom that can be applied to everyday life. One of the main points I've taken from this book, which I seem to repeat to others all the time, is that we all have a tendency to say, and believe, that we 'know' something - that we know it to be true - when actually all we've done is read it somewhere, or heard it on the grapevine. In this way, plenty of disinformation gets spread around and accepted as truth. This is SO dangerous. What do we really know to be true? Buy this book, read it, ponder that, stop being lazy with your thinking, and begin to transform you life. I can't wait to read it yet again now.

Format:Paperback
William Chittick is, perhaps, best known for his book "The Vision of Islam", a captivating and thorough introduction to the essence of the faith. In "Science of the Cosmos..." Chittick makes the case for a reversion to traditional, primordial interpretations of life as a balm for the ever increasing disenfranchisement brought about by this period of "enlightenment". He is particularly scornful of scientism, its prevalence in modern western society and the dehumanising affect of its philosophy.

His arguments are firmly rooted in the belief of the transcendent being so wonderfully depicted in the Islamic texts. Everything, he argues, must be studied with a firm attachment and reverence to the lord of the worlds.

The book itself is based on a series of lectures given by Chittick to a variety of audiences. His style of writing is clear and lucid. He, furthermore, doesn't rely on over the top metaphorical parlance which is so often the hallmark of books of this nature.

A wonderful and insightful Book. 5 Stars!

This book, although short and brief, boils down certain essential issues in Sufism and Western consciiousness.

It is a gentle reminder of the wisdom tradition in Islam and is a superb introduction and meditation on the issues that face the fragmented consciousness of our globalised world...
