5.0 out of 5 stars A must read if you are serious about tracking, 3 Feb 2004

Not to be missed. If you are interested in tracking then this is the book to get. It goes beyond just looking at the sign of what you are tracking be it human or animal but goes into what that animal was thinking doing etc.

This really goes into some depth on the subject and really is the best book around. Add this to animal signs and tracks by Oxford and you have a winning combo for sure.

Building my dirt box now to get some as Tom would say "Dirt time" there's no substitute

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but a little 'over the top' maybe(!?), 7 April 2010

Are there really 4000 odd pressure releases? Hmmm... (maybe, maybe not...Im not a professional tracker in a position to comment)

I'm not too sure if any university degree or reading any book prepares you to track as well as an experienced tracker on a course will. But for what its worth, I studied Geotechnical engineering (how soil behaves under loads and water conditions) and I would be quite happy to say that soil is too inconsistent in its structure for you to accurately pinpoint all of the details, consistently, that are presented here. One 'cliff crumble' to the next could in fact be indicative of the soil differing between one point and another, as soil changes constantly due to its mechanical properties and the weathering effects of the localised microclimate.

Pressure releases aside this is a well written book that introduces tracking well and will be good 'prior background reading' before attending a course if you are serious about tracking.

I would say that the 'Field guide to Nature observation and tracking' is probably a more realistically useful book that covers the topic in as much detail as you are ever likely to require and it would be my personal advise to buy this instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you can't learn to track from this, You can't learn!!!, 22 May 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Science and Art of Tracking (Paperback)
A wonderfully written and concise instructional manual. I have a degree in fish/wildlife management and have spent most of my life in the outdoors. I know a good outdoor book when I read one and this is GREAT!! But what else could you expect from TOM BROWN?
