Review

"It used to be that parents would look to the Bible or history or long-gone relatives to find a name for their baby. Then Mom and Dad began looking to singers and sports starts and movie actors and actresses for inspiration. Now comes Brooklyn writer Robert Schnakenberg with a new source: science-fiction characters."--"Chicago Tribune"

"Tempted to name your son Yoda? A new book called "Sci-Fi Baby Names" can help you make that important decision".""--"Newsday"

"Baby names such as 'China' and 'Moon Unit' are so yesterday. Now your kid can be 23rd century from Day One if you zap him or her with a name from the new book "Sci-Fi Baby Names"."--"Milwaukee Journal Sentinel"

Product Description

Here's an irreverent twist on a perennial gift book genre: the baby name book meets the weird, unusual, other worldly realm of science fiction. "Sci-Fi Baby Names" compiles 500 distinctive names from sci-fi books, movies, and TV shows into a handy reference with a crazy, retro, sci-fi design. Think babies on rocket ships! Babies with laser guns! Babies on Mars! This book has something for everyone. Many sci-fi fans will feel comfortable naming a child "Luke," "Robbie," or "James Tiberius" to honor their favorite characters. But a few fans will boldly go where no parents have gone before-with outlandish names like "Zardoz," "Klaatu," and "Davros."

Good book, weird binding problems 24 Jan 2009
By Sean Crago - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Useless novelty item or no, I'd say this book still makes a perfectly good gift. Read through it first, and it contained a plenty of names that sound a good deal more reasonable than some of what you hear when you get introduced to a modern kindergarten class. Reads as much like a sci-fi trivia book as it does a baby names book, and is very entertaining.

That said, the binding is so tight and the margins so narrow that it's a struggle to read the words nearest the spine. The publisher needs to find a new printer.

A treat for sci-fi enthusiasts to page through 2 Dec 2007
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Sci-Fi Baby Names: 500 Out of This World Baby Names from Anakin to Zardoz lives up to its title and then some. Each of the five hundred names presented is listed along with a source and trivia tidbit referring to characters of that name in science fiction movies, comics, television, and books. The names are categorized into traditional names ("George"), masculine names ("Cameron"), feminine names ("Talleah"), power names ("Quentin"), intellectual names ("Sigmund"), and exotic names ("Vultan"). A treat for sci-fi enthusiasts to page through, and a nice starting point for prospective parents interested in naming their child something a little bit different.
