Product Description

Product Description

'Sci-Fi Movie Freak' is packed with the spine-tingling excitement and thrilling moments that have made sci-fi movies a beloved genre for those who want the Force to be with them. The book celebrates a wide variety of more than 100 movies that have been important to the development of the genre, have helped raise the level of awesomeness in science-fiction films, and make movie-goers' imaginations soar. This is not a book on only the best movies of all time, though, like 'Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back'. Many low-budget and schlocky movies that sci-fi freaks need to see are also included, such as 'Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla'. Films are also included that represent science fiction to a new audience and totally rock a neophyte's brain, and lesser-known gems such as 'Cube' and 'Moon'. Movies are divided into various categories including space exploration, sci-fi adventure, what is man, cerebral sci-fi, and camp. The book also features 200 photos and posters, as well as Top 10 lists.

I Love This Book! 11 Nov 2011
By IDontEatCrayolaCrayons - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
"Sci-Fi Movie Freak" by Robert C. Ring is an outstanding book, but it's more than just an outstanding book--it's an outstanding experience.

The writing is excellent, the bright, vivid photographs are superb and the layout is phenomenal. When you crack open the pages of "Sci-Fi Movie Freak" you experience a barrage of images of the best of the best in Science Fiction, iconic still frames that elicit an emotional response drawn from the darkened-theater-full-on-surround-sound-jaw-dropping-popcorn-munching-movie-theater impregnated reaches of your memory banks that remind you of all the fun, the laughter, the excitement and, at times, the cathartic terror you've experienced over the years watching films like "Forbidden Planet", "Invasion of the Body Snatcher", "Godzilla", "Alien" and so much more.

And Mr. Ring's writing--fluid, accessible, clear and with a welcomed air of intellectualism--shares in that sense of joy and love for these classic Science Fiction Films. "Sci-Fi Movie Freak" is a page-turner, by the truest definition of the phrase. As I read, I found myself swept up in the fun of the book and drawn forward from beginning to end by the fluid tempo of Mr. Ring's writing, like a locomotive cascading down a mountainside, trailing a long train of boxcars, the momentum building moment to moment, the thrill of the ride increasing with each passing page.

I am, of course, a lover of Science Fiction films and my love for the genre knows few bounds. But it is not only my love for the source material that made this book enjoyable. Mr. Ring's writing would have made a true believer out of me had I not already had an embedded love for science fiction. It is in that way that "Sci-Fi Movie Freak" is not only a book for Science Fiction fans but a book for anyone who has seen a movie in the last hundred years.

If you don't already have a passion for Science Fiction, you likely will by the time you get to the last page of this book. And you'll have a bloody good time getting there too.

An outstanding overview of the genre 10 Nov 2011
By Brent Frankenhoff - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Ring does a great job of providing both hardcore and casual fans of science-fiction films with an overview of not only their favorites and the best known films, but also overlooked classics and some titles that should be overlooked (or viewed just to see if they're as bad as he says). He also manages to never spoil major plot points when discussing any of these films. The images and layout are outstanding and give a true feeling of what the viewer is in for in every case.

A great book to share with your kids 8 Nov 2011
By K. Liesl - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
My 11 year old son and I were BOTH fascinated with this book. We read it together. These are iconic movies and Ring picked iconic photos for each of them. Star Wars! Godzilla! Avatar! My kid was going nuts seeing familiar movies among his favorites as well as learning about some pretty obscure ones.

It's fun to see how Ring packs in so many great movies produced in the last 109 years. Rather than taking the boring countdown approach, Ring categorizes movies under concepts such as 'Best of the Best,' 'Lesser-Known Gems,' and 'The Failures,' which was my favorite chapter. Who knew a movie about giant attack rabbits called 'Night of the Lepus' would suck?

Another plus: a rather impressive trove of vintage sci-fi movie posters is included in the descriptions. This book isn't JUST for sci-fi fans - it's for anyone who likes movies, period!
