Anthony Marwood has always been one of my favourite musicians and he has surpassed himself in this recording. If one has heard his glorious tone live, the sound of this CD does not disappoint as the violin soars, sings and dances. The widely misunderstood violin concerto is totally brought to life and hearing this rendition reminds one of why Menuhin thought of the Schumann violin concerto as the missing link between the Beethoven and the Brahms concerti. I am delighted to have in my CD collection this recording of Schumann's own transcription of his cello concerto as again, it is superbly executed by soloist, conductor and orchestra. With such fine musicianship, I did not find myself comparing the cello version against the violin as the music speaks for itself. As one of the finest violinists of his generation, Marwood's virtuosity and imagination in the Phantasie shine through, making a somewhat tricky piece sound effortlessly beautiful.
I will thoroughly enjoy listening to this CD again and again and would highly recommend it to all.
