Five INSPIRED Stars! This recording, which contains material previously released in LP vinyl format, captures the 3-time Grammy-winning piano virtuoso Martha Argerich in 1976 in excellent performances of Romantic-era composer Robert Schumann's fantasies: the 3 movement "Fantasie in C major, Opus 17", highlighted by the Argerich's dramatic, emotional performance of the 11 minute "Tempo 1" first movement with its main theme displayed across the shifting tempos and the florid beauty of the "Langsam getragen" third movement. Schumann's "Fantasiestücke, Opus 12" which consists of 8 thematic pieces, written in 4 keys, is inspired by favorite Schumann characters from novels by Romantic author E.T.A. Hoffmann. Highlights are the fabulous "Des Abends" (Evening time), "Warum" (Why?) , the turbulent "Grillen" (Whimsy), Fabel" (Fable), the frantic "Traumes Wirren" (Dream Confusions), and the climatic "Ende vom Lied" (End of the Song) pieces. Captured here at age 36, the award-winning Ms Argerich by this time was already considered one of the greatest pianists in classical history and her performances of these beautiful, highly technical masterpieces are superbly executed with wonderful nuances, elevating the compositions with her well-known pianistic flair. My Highest Recommendation. Five IMPRESSIVE Stars! (Audio CD; notes in English, French, and German; Time: ~52 minutes)

Preformances must be different, but it cannot be much better than this one. Romanticism and power of emotions at its fresh bursting stream. Fantastic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Schumann's best, 12 April 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I believe.I'm not a huge Schumann man,but have always liked these 2 pieces, and argerich plays them to perfection.A pity that the Brendel pairing seems to have vanished,as I liked that even more, the sound being a tad more naturalistic, but this is well worth anyones time and money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great pianism 14 Jan 2013

Performance is here on one of the greatest pianists of our time. Argerich catches all the fire and pathos in what is some of the greatest piano music ever. This is self recommending for all pianophiles.

5.0 out of 5 stars She's Born to Perform These 12 April 2013
By Antonio Robert - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Martha Argerich has been criticized (once in a while) for sacrificing the spirit of the music she performs for the sake of sheer virtuosity, for which she is mostly famous.
Not this time. As a person with a particular fondness for Schumann (maybe due to a mental illness, which, like Schumann, her family was no stranger to), she feels his music acutely and precisely.
This recording of Fantasia and Fantastic Pieces, made for a Sony predecessor label in Italy in 1976, offers a wealth of a typical Schumannesque melody and pomp. And, unlike many Argerich recordings, it is fairly suitable for a late-night listening as well. But rest assured, her astonishing technique is still on full display.
Martha Argerich's Schumann has soul, personality, and her typical tone "grain", too.
If you really like Schumann, this CD should be indispensable for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars MARTHA ARGERICH IN SUPERB PERFORMANCES OF SCHUMANN FANTASIES 17 April 2012

The background sound is free of distractions and the piano sound is vivid. Recorded in 1976 on Columbia, this is a Sony Classics digital re-issue with the original LP cover and notes. My Highest Recommendation. Five IMPRESSIVE Stars! (Audio CD; notes in English, French, and German; Time: ~52 minutes. Trivia: At age 16, Ms Argerich won the Geneva and the Ferruccio Busoni International Competitions "within weeks of each other" and the 7th International Frédérick Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw at age 24, with special prizes given her for mazurkas and waltzes.)
