1. Mitsuko Uchida Talks To James Jolly About Robert Schumann

Product Description

CD Description

More than 15 years since her acclaimed album of Carnaval and Kreisleriana, Mitsuko Uchida marks the Schumann bicentenary 2010 with her first recordings of two of his best-loved works for solo piano - Davidsbündlertänze and Fantasie. With this new album, recorded at the Maltings at Snape, Dame Mitsuko shares the wealth of her experience as a Schumann interpreter, bringing to these enigmatic, questing pieces her celebrated musicality and depth of feeling. Written after Schumann was again in touch with his beloved, Clara – whose father was determined she should never marry him – the Davidsbündlertänze are at once an outpouring of Schumann’s feelings for her and a struggle between the two sides of the composer’s own musical nature. Fantasie is a deeply introspective soliloquy, beautifully reflected through the emotional complexity of Mitsuko Uchida's pianism

5.0 out of 5 stars Schumann Davidsbundlertanze. 31 Oct 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a very good and well produced CD. Uchida is on her usual magisterial and high precision form. The edition comes with an extra CD featuring a spoken interview with James Jolly which may be of interest to those with a deeper interest in piano technique. However, it could have done with a few played musical illustrations. After all what are CD's as opposed to written notes for?

5.0 out of 5 stars Is this value? 30 Dec 2010
Format:Audio CD
I would not presume to criticise the musical merits of this dic; suffice it to say that I bought it purely upon my appreciation of Dame Mitsuko whose merits are known to a generation of music lovers. However it sells at a premium price thanks to its "bonus disc", the production cost of which must have been small and its "Deluxe" packaging, which will take up more space on a CD collector's shelves than a conventionally packaged disc or discs. Again I am delighted to have the thoughts of Mischa Donat in the booklet notes but not so happy to have to decipher them against the contrasting backgrounds of the paper. Nor is it a cause for premium price to have colour pictures of the album sleeves of Dame Mitsuko's other recordings in the booklet. Like me, I assume that most of the other buyers of this disc will possess them anyway. The only point of this review is that there seems to be no justification for the premium pricing and I hope that this practice is not one that Universal intend to emulate with their small number of releases of classical music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 1 Oct 2010

This is a truly wonderful recording: precise, luminous and altogether mesmerising. Bought it after a recital Uchida gave where she played Davidsbundlertanze, and have been listening to it non-stop.
