The Kodaly Quartet have built a well deserved reputation as performers of 'classical' quartet music - their award winning Haydn series is about as good as it gets.

They bring that experience and insight into these quartets.

Schubert is a lot less 'Romantic' than many performers try to make him - and the restraint and elegance of these pieces is nicely brought out in these recordings.

This is more refined than raging - and all the better for it.

Great music, great performance.

Format: Audio CD
No piece of classical chamber music has a more seductive opening page than has Schubert's A Minor String Quartet. You'll sense mystery, tenderness and a few moments of horror as the movement proceeds. The Kodaly Quartet observe the exposition repeat, extending this spell-binding movement to fourteen minutes duration.
In several of his chamber works from his mature years, Schubert incorporates themes from his other works. Music from "Rosamunde" is heard in the second movement of this quartet, and the feelings and melodies of his song "Die Götter Griechenlands" echo in the slow moving menuetto.
The A Minor quartet is the first of only three that Schubert composed in his mature years. The other twelve date from his teenage years, and it is one of these that is included in this 65 minute CD.
Add this to your trolley if you'd like to gain cheap access to great music, but less drowsy, more dynamic performances are available.

More than adequate 16 May 2004
By Steve Kessell - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This recording by the Kodaly Quartet includes one of Schubert's "earlier" (1813) quartets (# 10, D 87) and one of his better-known later (1824) ones (# 13, D 804, the "Rosamunde"). It's a good introduction to Schubert's charming quartet style.
The performance is good; no complaints. At $7, it's not quite up to the standard set by some more extensive recordings (Alban Berg and Bosch on EMI; Quartetto Italiano on Phillips). BTW, if you're into Schubert's string quartets, the Melos-Quartett Stuttgart 6 CD complete set on Polygram, for $43, is an excellent deal.
