In the wake of the Alban Berg Quartett and the Hugo Wolf Quartet from Vienna, now we have the Cuarteto Casals of Spain redefining the very standards of modern string quartet playing. This expert group is at the highest level of ensemble playing, refinement and sheer excitement. As is true of an increasing number of younger quartets, they do not hesitate to employ a wide spectrum of vibrato, flexible bowing and dynamics (the influence of the "historical" performance movement is evident here), their bowing and articulation are both extraordinary and they think as one: they play this music like a composer would, with a true sense of architecture and harmonic direction. One of the three best recordings of the great G major Quartet, in which Schubert matches or even exceeds Beethoven's late achievements in this genre. All repeats are included in D.887. The other best versions are those of the Alban Berg Quartett (the second, live one is my favorite), and the recent release by the Hugo Wolf Quartett of Vienna. A truly compelling performance. Buy it.
