Product Description

Product Description

In his short life, Schubert wrote more than 600 songs, which were to become the foundation of the German lieder tradition. Now they are a mainstay of every lieder singer's repertoire and provide a constant source of surprises and delights for each generation of music lovers. This companion offers a survey of every song, detailing all the alternative versions and the abandoned torsos. English translations of all the texts are provided, together with discussions of the musical structures and guides to interpretation. Appendices explore the authors of Schubert's texts and tease out the thematic threads that run through his output and bind it into a creative unity. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Having engaged in extensive analysis of Schubert Lieder for my BA, the usefulness of this comprehensive survey can hardly be underestimated. Mr. Reed deserves great appreciation for his painstaking magnum opus. If you, like me, are fascinated by Schubert's vocal output and want to know more, John Reed won't let you down. Stand in awe of the scale of his scholarship!

.
For those who have the time and intellectual inclination, suggest you pair this book with Schubert: Lieder and go through the whole Schubert lieder experience, combining poetry, music, and criticism: a worthy pursuit of the best of humanity--amid the wrack and ruin of civilization in the 21st Century New Dark Age.
