5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive Schubert Piano Sonatas 2 Mar 2007
By V. Vo
I purchased this CD set on Amazon when they were still in stock about six years ago. This set is my most treasured possession as Madam Haebler's playing of the Schubert sonatas transcends piano playing. This is a remarkable collection that any classic music lover should get.

Granted, the Schubert Piano Sonatas can be very dull, boring, and long. However, Madam Haebler plays the sonatas where she keeps your attention due to her warm tone, colorful playing, and this child-like reverie that infuses her sound.

Take for instance, the great G-Major sonata, the music is just spell-binding when Haebler plays. The sonata just reaches towards the depths of your soul. Schubert listed this sonata as "Fantasy" and as a listener, I just thought she brought out my inner-most fantasy to a realization.

The three great last sonatas are justifiably the treasures of this set. To say they are expressive would be an understatement. For people who had the belief these sonatas are uninteresting, please listen to the last three. They contain some of the finest music ever written. Madam Haebler brings out the expressiveness of these sonatas as well as any pianist to have played these. She truly deserves her place as one of the greatest pianist of the last century.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the finest Schubert on record 22 Mar 2010
After a long time searching, finally managed to get my hands on these. It's a disgrace that Phillips deleted it! These performances are lucid, elegant, beautiful in the extreme, understated and supremely expressive - in short, everything I want to hear in Schubert. In the final Sonata, Haebler is the only pianist I have ever heard to rival the legendary recordings by Clara Haskil. She puts almost all other (generally rather more famous) Schubert interpreters to shame! For anyone who loves Schubert and his piano works, I can't recommend this box set strongly enough. If you manage to acquire it, you won't be dissapointed!

Any advise on the matter are welcome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Musical gems! 16 Nov 2012
By Hiram Gomez Pardo - Published on Amazon.com
The legendary pianism of Ingrid Haebler has surpassed the test of time to become obligated reference and paramater of comparison at the moment to caliber the virtues of other artists of the keyboard.

Haebler was pupil of Marguerite Long. Nevertheless, her sound, noble and majestic, leaves you breathless. Her prodigious fingering, aristocratic musicianship and flawless articulation made her the most remrakable female pianist in Schubert ( without never forget to Helen Boschi).

These recordings are now part of a legend. Haebler (83) lives in Vienna, and all of us owe her so much due these musical treasures will endure for the centuries to come.

Its purchase is absolutely recommended, once Philps label undertakes the task of re-releasing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A treasure,but 22 July 2012
By Kirk List - Published on Amazon.com
at the moment priced like one unfortunately. As of now, one can also obtain this set at a more reasonable price from Amazon France or Amazon Germany. Haebler is a full peer of my favorite Schubert pianists: the Serkins, Lupu, Brendel, Pollini and much of Arrau. As with her Mozart and Bach (French Suites)
She plays with extreme
precision- as with Arrau and Foldes, every note is audible. She is comfortable with the lyrical, childlike dramatic, tragic, and explosively angry Schubert- she is deeply expressive in such overtly different works
as D850/4 and 958/4, of D894/1 and the outburst in D959/2. The Impomptus and the Fantasy D940 ( with her
great Mozart partner Ludwig Hoffmann) also dramatize these multiple moods. Australian Eloquence has apparently discontinued its release of her D960 and D664 sonatas from this set, but should re-release it asap. One would know immediately whether to buy the set ( if that remains a possibility.) BTW hers is not a complete set of sonatas. Incomplete and fragmented sonatas are omitted. but earlier works such as D 537, 568 and 575 are included
