Format: Audio CD
Ameling's reading of Schumann and Schubert Lieder is sincere and noble, at times even awe-inspiring. There's always something genuinely beautiful, a sense of respect for music itself, when she sings with her etherial yet warm voice.

The sublimity of "Mein schonster Stern" alone makes this CD worth purchasing. Her Schumann recordings are so scarce now that it is joy to find 19 Schumann Lieder both well known and obscure gems on this disc. Accompanied by an original master piano of Schubert's days. Recorded in 1965/67.

Elly Ameling is my favourite Lieder singer. As one previous reviewer has said, this version of The Shepherd on the Rock is worth the price of the album on its own - specially as part of the two for a tenner offer!

These recordings were made in 1965 (Schubert) and 1967 (Schumann), when Ameling's voice was at its very best. I am a great fan of the lieder singing of Elly Ameling, and I heard her live in concert, and on record, from 1980 until she retired in 1995. The voice and the musicianship is of the highest class, quite inimitable I think, and it's impossible to put into words just how wonderful these two recitals are. It just gives you the goose bumps. Five stars is not nearly enough!!

A beautiful recording. Elly Ameling sings like an angel. The first song, " Der Hirt auf dem Felsen", alone, is worth the price of this CD. I first heard Elly Ameling sing the part of the Archangel Gabriel in Haydn's "The Creation" in Perth, Western Australia in the early 1960s. She sang like an angel then and subsequently graduated to Archangel status!! Everyone who loves Lieder should own this CD.

Elly Ameling is a wonderful singer and her voice has a special poetic quality. It blends beautifully with the piano on these songs. She seems to float on air. It's intoxicating.
I find her enchanting, specially when she sings Schumann, and I would always recommend her.
