5.0 out of 5 stars Schubert an excellent release 16 Mar 2011
Format:Audio CD
There are so many recordings of the great Schubert Trout quintet one might ask "do we need anymore?" The answer can be found here with this magnificent recording that proves that there is always room for a different interpretation as long as it is expertly done and realised with imagination.
This recording links a chamber work with songs in a way that may have been familiar to a concert that Schubert himself would have witnessed.
The Trout Quintet played here on original instruments is performed with vigour and excitement and sounds fresh and vibrant. Other recordings show how instruments have changed since the time of Schubert. But this recording attempts to give realism to the sort of sound that Schubert would have been familiar with.
There is a marvellous balance between the work as a Quintet and as a duet for piano and string Quartet. We get double bass instead of second violin along with a richness of sound with the String Quartet. Everything blends well with delicate sound that is bright and clearly focused.
Also on the disc are seven songs, which include Die Forelle. All of the songs were composed before the Quintet but they are concerned with water.
John Mark Ainsley(tenor) and Steven Lubin (fortepiano) are excellent together. Ainsley has fluid vocal characterization. And Lubin gives a delightful idiomatic performance that is sympathetic to the efforts of Ainsley.
The whole disc perfectly captures the spirit of Schubert and is an incredible recording that I cannot fault.
The compositions are charming and captivating. There is a free spirit in the atmosphere created through the movements that shows a carefree feeling with only the second movement having a more introspective mood.

The players of the AOAM are superb in the recording for Schubert's much loved chamber work. The tenor is also much appreciated with his emotions rendered in the lieder.
