As I was preparing to perform this work, and already had one recording, I required a different interpretation and so ordered this Berlin Soloists recording. In many ways this is a fine performance, marred for me, however, by the occasional 'rewriting' of the 1st Violin part in places.
Putting certain difficult passages up an octave, and playing fast triplets where Schubert only asks for duplets, seems dubious artistically at best, and self-indulgent and arrogant at worst. Either way it detracts from an otherwise fine parformance. The wind playing is particularly good, and the recording balance is so well mastered that for once it is possible to hear not just the clarinet and horn but also the bassoon in some excellent playing. The strings play with a fine degree of ensemble, and mutual intonation is very good.
This digitally remastered CD at a bargain price is a 'must have' especially as it comes coupled with the String Quintet - that's Schubert's 2 finest Chamber Works for less than the price of 1!

I really love this 2-CD set; it offers great performances of these two Schubert works, high-quality sonics, reasonable notes in the booklet, and it is very good value-for-money!
What we have here is a straight reissue of an old Teldec "Ultima" set Schubert - Octet & String Quintet from a few years back. The lovely and "not as well known as it should be" Octet is one of Schubert's greatest works, played here by a collection of Berlin Soloists on a recording from 1987 that has been available on its own beforeSchubert - Octet and Schubert - Octet. I point out the old issues to warn of duplication!
Mentioning which, the 1979 recording of the Famous Quintet D956 from the Brandis Quartet, has also been issued on the above "Ultima" set and as a single Warner Apex CD Schubert - Quintet. This is also a very fine perfomrmance.
This constant repackaging of old recordings can cause confusion; perhaps Warner Classics can stop now and stabilise the market for collectors? Unlikely!
