This is Schubert as he would have heard his music. Many big names of the piano have recorded the later sonatas, often as a 'calling card', but Badura-Skoda, a musicologist as well as a fine pianist, here uniquely records them on his own collection of keyboard instruments of that era. No velvety Steinway sounds here, but an authentic voice from yet composer's own era. As well as the famous later works, Badura-Skoda covers the less familiar early works - though do note that the last and greatest sonata (in B flat major D960) is not included in this collection, but on a 2 CD set of 3 performances of the same work on different instruments. A must-listen for anyone interested in older instruments or an authentic sound for Schubert's music. The performances are generally so good that the occasionally edgy sound (recorded in the 90s) is hardly noticeable. A great value buy!
