My All-Time Favorite 3 May 2003
By coronadogibson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I have loved Sir John Barbirolli's orchestration of Schubert's 9th Symphony since I first bought it on vinyl 35 years ago. It has always been my favorite symphony, and in my opinion no other version I have ever heard has such rich harmonies and such perfect timing. Barbirolli is absolutely the best! I was thrilled to discover the existence of this CD because I had pretty much worn out the album. The mastery is perfect... just as I remember the original, but with all the quality of a present-day recording. Then you throw in Schubert's 8th and the Brahms variations... what more could anyone want on a two-CD set? If you love classical music, you need to have this in your collection.

Only some things work, the best coming from Barbirolli 18 April 2009

At Amazon Marketplace's low price, this was pretty irresistible, even though I had my doubts going in. Rafael Kubelik had a perplexing career. In no way was he a second-rate conductor, and at times you could be convinced that he was great. That doesn't explain, however, his sizable ratio of indifferent recordings. This Schubert Fourth from 1961 isn't inspired, but it is energetic, forward, and beautifully played by the Vienna Phil. For me, one great flaw is the slow, clunky Scherzo, but everything else is fine.

Who can explain the lackluster Schubert "Unfinished" that follows? It, too, is with the Veinna Phil., from 1963. Yet in the space of two years the playing has turned drab, and Kubelik's interpretation drags its feet and lands heavily where it should be light. It's one of the dullest "Unfinished" recordings I've ever encountered.

On CD 2 we get the Schubert Ninth from Barbirolli and his Halle Orch. from 1966. In his lifetime Barbrioli had little Aemrican recognition after the Second Wolrd War until shortly before his death in 1970. He had retreated from the NY Phil. under rather ignominious circumstances, and once ensconced in Manchester, he didn't often appear on top record labels until the mid-Sixties, when aapearances with the Berlin Phil. in Mahler made people take notice. There were also wonderful recordings of Mahlr song cycles with Janet Baker from this period, and the Elgar Cello Cto. with Du Pre.

Four decades later, we find ourselves scrambling for more recordings from someone who in many ways was a maestro comparable to Beecham. Barbirolli's Halle musicians still sound far from top drawer, but Barbirolli's ability to move the listener goes beyond technique. This Schubert Ninth is fairly humdrum in sound and not extremely impressive for execution. But there's a sense of loving authority which was Barbirolli's signature.

The pacing is old-fashioned a la Furtwangler, with slow tempos and serious weight in the orchestra for the first two movements. At this speed, the music conveys a kind of grave joy rather than ebulience. It takes some patience, and so most listeners will prefer modern accounts that provide more speed and contrast in the Scherzo and finale. Finally comes the Brahms Haydn Variaitons with the Vienna Phil. from 1969, when Barbirolli was enjoying his autumn resurgence of fame. The reading is broad, large-scaled, lusciously played, and rather too relaxed. (EMI has included the same performance on Barbirolli's first-rate accounts of the two Brahms piano concertos with a young Daniel Barenboim.)

In sum, nothing here is indispensable, but the Barbirolli items will appeal to his fans.
