The format is familiar for those who have bought this in previous years - a review of news for the year to September 2010, with the book coming into print in time for Christmas.
For anyone interested in what has been happening in the world, it brings a tremendous amount of information into one place. Six months on from the election it is fun to be reminded of the dramatic twists and turns, from "Cleggmania" after the first TV debate to Gordon Brown's "Bigotgate", where his remarks giving out about a voter were heard by the world when his mike was inadvertently left on.
Reading the outcome of stories is interesting as well - I had not realized that all those arrested a part of a sinister plot to assassinate the pope during his UK visit had been subsequently released without charge.
And then there is the usual wealth of stories, surveys, lists, celebrity gossip and random facts. This year includes OFCOM's acceptability grading of offensive language on TV, the smoking and drinking patterns of children, what people say they would do for £400 and a great page of celebrity quotes of the year.
It says in the preface that this is an almanac "written to be read" - and a good read it is too.
