Flora the mouse makes use of her classroom home by joining in the children's lessons. Little do they know Flora learns to read together with them. Tragedy strikes when the caretaker puts down poison for the mice, and no one will listen to Flora's warnings.

About the Author

Formerly a farmer and a teacher, Dick King-Smith is best-known for his third career as a writer. His phenomenally successful children's stories are marked by endearing humour and characters of unique depth and life. THE SHEEP-PIG won The Guardian Award and was transformed into the blockbusting film, BABE, which added hugely to his profile. Dick lives in Keynsham, near Bristol. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Clever Mouse 8 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
The Schoolmouse is a story about a family of mice who live inside a school. One mouse is very interested in what happens in the school and teaches herself to read. Because she can read she saves her Mum and Dad and little sister from eating some mice pellets.

As always, Dick King-Smith writes beautifully, there is a real innocence about this book but at the same time it doesn't shy away from subjects like danger and death and survival of the fittest (or in this case cleverest?) I thoroughly recommend this book. My 2 children (8 & 5) loved it.

Awful.
Really, really bad.
e.g. The owl announces its attack to its prey....- natural selection at its finest don't you think...?

...Buck's eyes change colour on a whim... - I have "mood-eyes" myself so I swished my way through that little detail....

as to the body-count.....well that's impressive, - perfect for a child's bedtime reading...
