Product Description

Review

'The book is not only worthwhile for purposes of study and expanding knowledge, but it is also a source that we can use with great pleasure to achieve happiness as riders. It deserves to become a valuable part of present-day equestrian literature.' Brigadier Professor Kurt Albrecht, director of the Spanish Riding School, 1974-85

Product Description

For centuries horses have been trained in-hand within the classical schools of riding, yet today work in-hand is often forgotten, set aside as unimportant, or thought to be too time-consuming by modern trainers. This is unfortunate because there is much to teach horses from the ground. German trainer Richard Hinrichs, an acknowledged expert on schooling inhand presents his training programme showing how schooling from the ground builds trust, obedience and balance in the horse. He clearly demonstrates that in-hand work is an excellent way of supporting and complementing work under saddle, and can be especially helpful for riders striving to achieve the higher-level movements for dressage competition. Richard Hinrichs demonstrates how the use of reins, whip, voice and body language can encourage voluntary co-operation from the horse and allow him to develop his balance and confidence without the added complications of a rider's weight. The books is filled with clear explanations and numerous colour photos of the necessary equipment and techniques for schooling in-hand: aids and their application, work on the lunge; long reining; suppling and collection; lateral movements - shoulder-in, travers, renvers, and half-pass: flying changes and pirouette: piaffe and passage; the Spanish walk; and airs above the ground - pesade, levade, courbette, and capriole. A thorough reading of this book will provide ample proof that there are many different ways of training within the system of classical equitation, and that every trainer should explore all the available methods without prejudice. A trainer possessing a well-rounded education in all aspects of horse training will ultimately produce the best horses. As Brigadier Professor Kurt Albrecht, director of the Spanish Riding School from 1974 to 1985, attests. Richard Hinrichs has included much valuable theoretical knowledge on schooling in-hand that has also been well tried in practice.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for any serious rider and trainer, 13 Dec 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Schooling Horses In-hand: For Suppling and Collection (Paperback)
This book is one that I would recommend wholeheartedly, to anyone who wishes to train horses, and not only to the higher levels. It covers lunging and long-reining as well as work in hand, and is therefore useful to anyone backing and starting young horses or reschooling older ones.

A friend in the US bought me the video of the same title by Richard Hinrichs a couple of years ago, before it became available here. He had been very impressed by it, and so was I. I had at that time, never heard of Richard Hinrichs, and was immediately impressed by the calm and kind manner in which the horses were treated. I have seen some examples of in hand work where the horse becomes tense and anxious, but Hinrichs work exudes calm, and is Classically superbly correct.

It is good to see him training a variety of breeds, from the Iberians to Anglo-Arabs and Hannoverians, all in the same kind, quiet manner, producing work of the highest quality. Even his dogs and pygmy goats perform some Spanish walk and trot!!

The text is clear and easy to follow and the photos are stunning. The book is a delight from cover to cover. Buy the video too! I hope that the book and video bring Herr Hinrichs the wider international recognition that he undoubtedly deserves.

4.0 out of 5 stars New thoughts on classical training, 24 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Schooling Horses In-hand: For Suppling and Collection (Paperback)
Although I don't own a horse, I found this book incredibly interesting. The author is from the Spanish Riding School and he has simplified the moves used at the school so that the average horseman can apply the training to their own horse and pony.

I think it would be especially useful for youngsters as it teaches them to be supple, balanced and co-ordinated before they have a rider introduced but it would be great for any horse.

I would thoroughly recommend this for anyone interested in maintianing or improving their horses way of going.
