This promises to be another teen school drama with love and hate, dramas and tears. Fraser, at the peak of his talent, plays the lead role with sensitivity and honesty.

He wins a scholarship to a private boarding school that is a gateway to the elite universities across the world. He manages to fit in, make friends and acquire a girlfriend. inevitably, things go wrong and choices have to be made.

This film also stars Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Chris O'Donnell. This film is in the same vein as Dead Poets Society.

Some of the plot advances too quickly, particuarly some of the end scenes feel rushed as conclusions are drawn too quickly but all involved perform wonderfully.

Sadly, there are no DVD extras.

A-list in the making 26 July 2004
Format:VHS Tape
Shallow as it may sound, I only bought this film because of an article I'd read in Attitude magazine about the hottest moments in Hollywood history. After reading about this film - which features Matt Damon, Chris O'Donnell and Brendan Fraser in a naked brawl in the communal showers of a boarding school in the 1950s - my mind was made up. Having said that, I did enjoy the film as a whole. Sadly, the scene in question is rather short, but sweet nonetheless. What is particularly interesting here is to see these actors, as Attitude puts it, 'A-list before they were A-list' (the film is from 1992, when the lead actors were still young and strapping). The three put in mravellous performances, a joy to watch. Unfortunately the script doesn't quite match up and the typically feel-good moral tone in the film is rather grating. So it's five stars for the shower scene and three for the rest. Enjoy!

It's the 1950s somewhere in America. David Greene gets the chance of a lifetime: the boy with a working class background is offered a scholarship for a famous prepschool. St Matthews needs him, because he is great at playing football. There is only one big problem: David is Jewish ...
His coach advises him to keep his religion to himself. David takes the advice and first everything seems to work out all right. He makes a lot of friends, with his help the school wins all the football matches and a pretty girl falls in love with him. But then somebody finds out that he is Jewish and everything changes ...

I liked Brendan Fraser as David Greene. I think it is a shame, that he doesn't play in more substantial films like this one, instead of the Mummy and Bugs Bunny stuff he usually does. Matt Damon is quite good as well as the kid from an upper class family, who cannot live up to their expectations.
