Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Don't be fooled by the long, old-fashioned title. The Royal School of Needlework Definitive Guide to Cross Stitch and Tapestry (phew!), is well constructed and impressively complete.

It is intended to function as the ultimate companion for cross stitchers and needleworkers of all abilities. Beginners will no doubt plunge into the multimedia tutorial, which, with its text and video explanations of stitch making and history of stitchwork, is quite fascinating as well as being educational. Beyond the tutorial, you can get into needlework design. There are 1,200 motifs on the CD for you to work with, but better still you can import any image of your own into the software for conversion to a cross-stitch pattern, from a photo of a pet to a drawing you have scanned. Not only will the software convert the image into a grid suitable for use as a template; it will do a colour conversion too, suggesting what colour threads you need to have to hand. Thread colours are matched to particular ranges available in shops, and you can even get a list of what you need to buy to make the design.

There is a lot more to this CD than there is space here to write about it--if you are even vaguely interested in needlework it's definitely worth a look.--Sandra Vogel

3.0 out of 5 stars This software is not as useful as I expected, 20 Jan 2001
By A Customer
I bought this software because I wanted to be able to design my own samplers using scanned motifs and fonts from my computer - the first time I tried to use it for a test run I discovered a bug in the software. The program works OK for normal TrueType fonts - all as expected, however when you try to do the same font in Bold or Italic or Bold Italic the letter is chopped off at the right hand edge- the program tries to make the letter the same width as that letter in Normal, letters in Bold and Italic aren't the same width so you lose part of the stitch pattern. Not only do I now have a program that doesn't do what I wanted it to in the first place but of course I can't return it as I had to open it to install it! Apart from this the software appears to be very good - just what not I wanted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Innovation to an old craft, 24 Nov 2000
By A Customer
As I am only 24 I expected this to be very boring. I had tried my hand at cross stiching before and did manage a few simple designs. This book will defintely kill the idea of this craft as boring, and a craft for old ladies who have nothing better to do. First time ever that I have seen this craft so very well presented and so easy to create. It is a must for all new brides who want to make thier home unique nad add a touch of loving care to their home. Also, a hand crafted gift will never be forgotten. The only disappionting fact was that devliery of this item is restricted only for certain contries.
