Product Description

Product Description

Every book tells a story. And the 70 titles in the "Pocket Penguins" series are emblematic of the renowned breadth of quality that formed part of the original Penguin vision in 1935, and that continues to define our publishing today. Together, they tell one version of the unique story of Penguin. Gervase Phinn's fond memoirs of life as a school inspector have shown his homeland of Yorkshire in a new and often hilarious light. Penguin have published each of Phinn's four books and in "The School Inspector Calls", he reveals how even a jaded school inspector can be left speechless by straight-talking children.

About the Author

Gervase Phinn is the author of The Other Side of the Dale, Over Hill and Dale and Head Over Heels in the Dales, all of which have been top ten bestsellers. He is married with four children and lives near Doncaster.

Having already purchased the excellent audio book "In a class of his own" we found a number of anecdotes are repeated in the audio book of "A school inspector calls". However the School Inspector Calls did also contain some new stories and in particular a few which focused on and were of great amusement to our more senior citizens. Conversely, and a sad reflection of the times, is that there are a couple of instances of language which we would rather not hear on what would otherwise be good all round family entertainment.

It is a pity that Gervase has not produced two separate categories of anecdotes as subjects for his audio books: one of stories to do with children he came into contact with as a school inspector and one of stories from other walks of life (including reminiscences of him as a child).

I disagree with the negative view of the last review. To hear Gervase live if you know him through his books is another dimension. I laughed all the way to the end.
Yes, ok, one or two quotes from his books are there but they are slightly different and that's interesting in itself. Gervase talking to an audience make it very different from the books anyway. I loved this CD.

Very dissapointed, we have all the Dales series of this author and this book has just taken stories from them thus it is a book of repeats. Should be pointed out before people purchase it. As it was a gift, for my wife, a great disapointment. Not worth buying if you have the other books. Len Gray.
