4.0 out of 5 stars Cliched froth. Loved it! 10 Jan 2009

I seem to be the first reviewer for this film and as there's not much of an Amazon synopsis please be aware that this review contains spoilers.

This film is billed as "The Fully Monty meets Calendar Girls". That's pushing it a little but this is a very entertaining, if somewhat lightweight, romantic comedy.

In Naples Sophia (Kelly Brook) enrols in an evening class teaching young ladies the art of seduction. Not through tawdry overt sexuality but by teaching grace, elegance, sensuality and above all self-belief.

Escaping a loveless marriage Sophia travels to Newcastle to set up a similar class for the local ladies, titling it a "School for Seduction".

Enter stage left said group of local ladies who all are having marriage, relationship and / or self-esteem problems. Lack of partners or a really dire choice of husband, coupled with the difficulty of juggling home life and work means that these women are unhappy and unloved. Worse still they don't love themselves.

The casting here is superb. Margi Clarke works in her husband's chip shop. Dervla Kirwan manages corporate events in the hotel that Sophia chooses for her classes. Emily Woof is a single mother working in both Asda and the chip shop to make ends meet for herself and her daughter. Jessica Johnson plays another Asda worker - sassy and rather aggressive trading hopes of love for alcohol and cheap sex.

The menfolk come across as a totally unlovable bunch apart from the ever watchable Tim Healy (as Clarke's husband) and Ben Porter as Toni, a transvestite trying to improve his act who also joins the class.

This is not a subtle film, although some quite nuanced performances are coaxed from Kirwan, Brook and Porter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lighthearted Film 31 July 2011

'School For Seduction' is a entertaining film, it wasn't something that would normally appeal to me, I'm glad that I bought it.

A British comedy, it centres around working class women from Newcastle who they lead simple lives with ordinary jobs. Taken for granted by their husbands and looking for some excitement, they decide to become more confident and appealing to their men. As a result, they take a course in seduction run by Kelly Brook's character. The women begin to take stock of their lives, their relationships and change their outlook on life.

'School For Seduction' has a very amusing script and is an unusual idea, not the typical British film. All of the characters are believable and the acting is excellent from a range of quality character actors, notably Tim Healey and Margi Clarke who make an hilarious double act as man and wife. A funny, lighthearted and uplifting movie.

A nice movie. Doesn't tax the mind, just easy to watch. Oh, by the way, Kelly Brook must be one of the most beautiful women in the world.

Mixed comments on IMDb and elsewhere, such as "Two Hours (100 minutes in fact) of Man bashing - obviously written with the intent of making all men out to be sexist, idiots." By no means, not ALL men at any rate. There is a great deal more to this film than that.
Set in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in 2004, more a reflection of some aspects of contemporary society I would have thought. Amusing for sure, with a goodly number of grains of salt: sad, reflective, sardonic, but always entertaining.
