From the Manufacturer

Treat your Feet

Scholl Velvet Smooth Foot Soak is cleansing and nourishing way to enhance your feet's beauty routine, helping to relieve tension and wash away fatigue to give you silky soft, relaxed feeling and beautiful looking feet. Tired legs and feet at the end of the day can be caused by sitting at a desk, or standing for long periods of time leaving them feeling heavy, uncomfortable and even swollen as a lack of movement slows the blood flow. Footcare is important for healthy feet; after all, they're with you throughout your life. With green caviar, Marine Serum and vitamin E, this effective and caring foot soak lets you easily give your feet the attention they deserve, and you the confidence to take off your shoes whenever and wherever you like.

How to Use

To give your feet a real treat after a long day, simply add 15 ml of Scholl Velvet Smooth foot soak into 3-5 litres of warm water; it's ideal for use after the Velvet Smooth Express Pedi electronic foot file too, nourishing your newly exfoliated skin. After filing hard skin and soaking your feet for 15 minutes, wipe them dry and apply Velvet Smooth Intense Serum to really lock in the moisture. Put a spring in your step with Scholl and join the feet elite.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I was attracted to this product because I had been having problems with dry skin on my feet and this promises to hydrate as well as cleansing, whereas most similar products tend to just dry your skin further.

In use, I found the smell quite pleasant and this does help with relaxation, but you do need to make sure you don't put too much in with the water, as it is quite strong. I found it worked very well in terms of cleansing and combined with some kind of exfoliation - e.g. pumice stone - this makes your feet feel a lot better.

In conjunction with the companion product : Scholl Velvet Smooth Pedicure Daily Foot Moisturiser 60 ml - this does seem to work very well for dry skin. However - one of first ingredients is "Sodium Laureth Sulfate" which is known as a skin irritant and can make dry skin worse. This is why you need to be careful about diluting it sufficiently - it is probably also a source of a slight "chemical smell" if you don't do this.

All in all, I think this is good for your feet as long as you dilute well and moisturise afterwards. But I can also see how the smell and presence of Sodium Laureth Sulfate could put some people off.

I have no doubt that this foot soak works. If, like me, you have feet like Fred Flintstone, then this may be the only answer. But, the blurb does rather give the impression of a cuddly, tree hugging product, especially when it refers to green caviar, Marine Serum and vitamin E. You may get a totally different impression if you check out some of the main ingredients:

Sodium Laureth Sulfate - Sodium Lauryl Sulfate's evil twin. A known skin irritant that pollutes groundwater, is bioaccumulating and is toxic to aquatic life. It is also used as a pesticide and herbicide and emits toxic fumes when heated.

Cocamidopropyl Betaine - The American Contact Dermatitis Society named it 'Allergen of the Year' in 2004.

Phenoxyethanol - Repeated exposure over prolonged periods has been linked to contact dermatitis, worsening of eczema, reproductive toxicity and neurotoxicity.

Benzoic Acid - A preservative, linked to asthma problems and increased levels of hyperactivity in children.

Tocopheryl Acetate - VITAMIN E mixed with acetic acid, that can actually irritate your skin more than help repair or heal it.

Hexyl Cinnamal - Citronellol - Limonene - Linalool - Synthetic fragrances that must be listed on the label, because they are severe allergens. Used in certain pesticides because they can cause central nervous system disruption. Skin, eye and respiratory tract irritant. Can trigger asthma attacks.

Sodium Hydroxide - Used to make paper, soap, paint stripper, refining aluminum ore and producing biodiesel fuel. Can cause severe skin burns, damage eyes and any ingestion whatsoever may be fatal.

Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone - Another synthetic fragrance linked to skin sensitisation and central nervous system disruption.

Sodium Benzoate - Skin and respiratory irritant.

As I said, it works... so, the choice is yours.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Firstly, I should say I would not have bought this for a couple of reasons (which follow) but i was very grateful for the option to try it :

1) I am leery of many commercial beauty products because of the ferocious cocktail of all sorts of synthetic chemistry. There have been many interesting books written about this, and I do believe that we are very slowly awakening to the fact that just as the cocktail of possibly individually relatively innocuous but together relatively toxic additives in food are a potential health time-bomb, a similar problem awaits with substances applied to the skin. Particularly as many of these, given the right molecular structure may absorb more deeply than just at the epidermal level.

I always get subject to faint warning bells when presented with a list of products I don't recognise, chemical components which do not come as part of the chemical makeup of a specific botanical, and, moreover am aware that while just using one product every so often which contains (for example)the commonly found foamer sodium laureth sulfate (as this does) may not be too problematic, its widespread use in commercial products means the overall level used may well reach toxic levels.

So.........I prefer, as far as possible, to use beauty products made by companies who use naturally occurring chemistry.

When I first tried this I just couldn't understand the instructions it says on the label one thing and then mentions something else (other product) in the preparation of this stuff which you have to mix with warm water and soak your feet in so you will need a basin and measuring jug. It also says on the label to dilute it with a larger amount then the water which I found a bit odd too but anyway I just filled up the basin and used my own guess work. Maybe its my eyes when you get to my age or am missing something here hopefully someone else can share some light on this.
