A tale of fear from best-selling author Tanya Huff!

Scholar of Decay is the story of a man driven by love into the darkest corners of the world. When Aurek Nuiken's wife is attacked and made prisoner by an evil mage, he must search the Domains of Dread for the spell that will allow him to free her. But ultimately his wife's freedom - and his own - lies in the hands of a clan of wererats who are not inclined to assist him. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read 17 Dec 2011
By David

I first read this book a few years ago and though I wouldn't be able to get a decent copy for myself with the Ravenloft series being out of print. (It's good to see some of the books back in print, especially this one.) This story concerns a character known as Dmitri Nuikin and his dealings with a scheming family in a devastated city that gives off a classical French/ Venetian feel.

I found the setting and writing style to be interesting and 'very picture painting.' After finishing the book for the first time I remember having a great conversation with my friend who also read the book before lending it to me. The books a great read and I would certainly recommend it, this book also made me check out other books written by the author Tanya Huff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scholar of Decay 21 Nov 2011

This is a good book you feel this the older brother and the younger brother are so different.
The younger brother could be said the be a blinder against the rats and both his brother.
The older brother completely blind to the rest of the world in the search for his wife.
I enjoyed the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A perfect Ravenloft novel 7 Oct 2007
By Andrew Gray - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Scholar of Decay by Tanya Huff sixth book in the recently re-released, and repackaged, Ravenloft the Covenant series. These books were originally published back in the middle nineties, but are now being released in trade paperback with new covers. Before the re-release of these I had read some of them, now I am happy that I will be able to read more of them. If you have never read a Ravenloft novel before, the easiest way to describe them is Dark Fantasy. Or, some may even say fantasy with a sadistic twist. In Ravenloft novels, readers will find many familiar fantasy elements but they will also find darker elements as well.

The main plot of this book centers around the scholar researching a spell to help his wife. The situation of his wife and how she is in the predicament she is in is well explained and provides a good catalyst for the story. There is also a myriad of subplots present as well. There is the relationship between the two brothers Aurek and Dmitri. There is the relationship between a pair of twin sisters and the rest of their family. Actually, in regards to the plot of this book there is so much stuff going on it is almost impossible to list it all here ad not spoil elements of the book itself. The plot is very well laid out and has a very natural flow to it. Ms. Huff quite obviously had a plan she wanted to accomplish with this story, and in my opinion she accomplishes quite a bit and created a very interesting story.

The characters in this book are very well written and add depth to the story. Each character's individual motivations are laid out for the reader to understand, as well as each character's actions are directly influenced by their past and their motivations. It's nice to see characters acting in a certain way not simply because the story says they need to. There are many memorable characters in this novel such as Aurek, Dmitri, Louise, Jacqueline, and too many more to name in this simple review. Even with all the characters, and plots, present in this book I never once felt like I didn't know where a character was or what was going on. That is a credit to Ms. Huff's ability to not only keep me entertained, but to keep me informed as well.

The only criticism I have with this book is there are a couple times during the book where there are dramatic point of view shifts with no break between the shift and the previous paragraph. These shifts actually jarred me out of the story and forced me to reread several sections to make sure I truly didn't miss anything.

In the grand scheme of things though, I really did enjoy this novel. It was a fast paced, solidly written fantasy book. It's not a book that requires the reader invest a great deal of thought into. Instead, the way the novel is written it allows the reader to be taken along for the ride.

Fans of dark fantasy or horror fantasy will no doubt find elements in this novel that they will appreciate. Even fans of traditional fantasy will find things within the pages of this book to enjoy. This is not an epic adventure/story, so if that is what you are looking for you may want to look somewhere else. However, if you are looking for a self-contained story with no books to read before or after, give this novel a shot. I can easily see myself recommending this novel to the right people.

1.0 out of 5 stars For Ravenloft fans only 5 Feb 2009
By Wren Dreolin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
As a long-time fan of Tanya Huff's writing, I was willing to take a chance and read this book. I am not in general a fan of dark fantasy, nor of Ravenloft, and I think that is a large reason that I disliked this novel. This is the only novel by Ms. Huff that not only did not make my favorite book list, but actually made me wish I hadn't read it. I don't think the fault lies with the author. I think it is a case of being so outside of what I am used to reading from her. So, if you like dark (and depressing) fantasy, or are a fan of Ravenloft, you may have more enjoyment from the book than I did, but if you are a fan of Ms. Huff's other work and want to read it for that reason, I sugest that you may wish to borrow it from your library rather than spend money on it, or better yet skip it all together.
3.0 out of 5 stars just okay 14 May 2013

As far as Ravenloft books go, this one is just okay nothing to get to excited about ... unfortunately. The book starts off great and from there just goes blah ... Wererats, politics, hidden tomes, magic sounds great right? Well here goes the downsides of that mix; whiny drama queen characters. If u read some of the other reviews and book descriptions you can see what the books is about, so I won't go there. My problem is that so much of the book is taken up w/ this younger cry baby brother who is a fop. He uses the lamest romantic one liners that makes me nothing but the biggest tool ever. Everybody in the book except him knows that he's being a played, and I mean everybody; and everybody makes fun of him to some extent or another. The older brother aurek is pretty cool and his quest was entertaining, was because it gets old when you put it in context to the whole book where u are slogging through the younger brothers whiny pity parties where is played the patsy by the darklord's conniving wererat twin sister. Most of aurek's problems and dilemmas in the book would have been solved if he had grown some balls and just told his whiny crybaby emo brother what he was doing. As the reader there is no mystery at all to the story or plot. You just want to scream at the players, hey just be straight up honest with your brother, or hey dipwad, you are sleeping w/ a giant wererat that's using you to get at the magic brother so she can use him against her sister ... a chick who just wants to use you then eat u afterward .... I love ravenloft and I've been so jazzed reading these books on kindle .... I gave the book 3 stars because it isn't bad per say, its just bland.
