Excellent soloists (especially Stig Andersen and Rene Pape), chorus and orchestral playing. A fascinating work, worthy of the composer's teacher (Bruckner) and conductor in his cello-playing days (Mahler). Can see why Schmidt was called "the Austrian Elgar". Recommended to anyone who collects sacred music.

I was so disappointed when I bought the other version on Chandos that I wondered why I had ever been so impressed by the work and why I had held it in such esteem for so long. But this version restored my confidence in it, and my own judgement.
This sounds completely sincere while the other one makes me feel uncomfortable. A work so saturated in the spirit and sound of Bach and Wagner's Mastersingers - but written at the time it was, between 1933 and 1937 - has to be performed with total conviction for it to take it's proper place as a crucial work in the history of music - for the vital reason that it defiantly confronts and defeats the logic of Art History. And that is an important lesson.
