Book Description

1 Nov 2008 Oneworld Classics
Unsuccessful in his ambitions, the young and naive Peter Schlemihl seals a pact with the Devil in which he exchanges his shadow for the purse of Fortunatus, thereby gaining everlasting riches. But when he is ridiculed, persecuted and hated for being different from other men, he realizes that poverty is easier to bear than the loss of his peace of mind. Originally written as a cautionary tale for the children of Chamisso's patron, "Peter Schlemihl" was hailed by contemporaries as a masterpiece with a wide adult appeal, and continues to capture imaginations today.

4.0 out of 5 stars A grim fairytale 23 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
Peter Schlemihl exchanges his shadow for an everlasting purse, only to find out that apart from fortune he has also gained mistrust and scorn. Thus this tale starts as a warning against Mammon, but it gets a twist when the devil comes up with a new offer: Peter can have his shadow back, if he sells his soul.

Faust exchanged his soul for wealth, Peter is offered respect of his fellow humans, lost in an earlier deal, in return. Morally, this seems even a more difficult question.

The story is straightforwardly told, in simple language children can understand. But it will probably take an adult mind to get to the bottom of the dilemmas thrown up in this booklet.
