5.0 out of 5 stars 51 Early Tracks by the Great Moroder 7 Jun 2013
By Scott Coblio - Published on Amazon.com
Verified Purchase
51 pristine recordings of a Giorgio Moroder most people don't even remember--from the days when he was out front, not behind the curtain, as a pop singer/songwriter/performer. I know he will always be remembered for his disco/new wave & soundtrack recordings but my favorite Giorgio is this early guy who was still finding his musical footing.

He is not the best singer, but his voice is oddly endearing, and it grows on you more and more as you continue listening. The songwriting runs the gamut from quirky pop anthems (Son of My Father, Underdog, Looky Looky) to moody, atmospheria ("Stop" is a minor masterpiece) and all stops in between, each of them insanely catchy, sometimes goofy, but the innovativeness he would become famous for is already in evidence throughout.

His penchant for repetition (which he would later automate in the music tracks) is noticeable more in the lyrics here, in which repeating words or parts of words is a recurring motif ("Looky looky looky, aint she pretty-pretty-pretty? She's my brand new girl!") It is also a joy to hear his playful falsetto (prefiguring Elton John's "la la la's in Crocodile Rock"), and one can't help wondering if the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson wasn't among his many influences. One gets the feeling, listening to this compilation, that Moroder was influenced by a myriad of artists and sounds of the time. Certainly "Son of My Father" owes a considerable debt to "Spirit in the Sky", although it's every bit as good, if not better. So many strong tracks--even with 51 songs, I wish the compilation were twice as long. There is something about the music that is energizing and calming at the same time, and when you get to the end of this compilation, you want more.

Sound quality is incredible--these sound straight from the original masters--no crackles, pops or hiss, and great clarity makes this collection a frustration-free experience from beginning to end. Finally--no more having to listen to youtube recordings from scratched up vinyl records!

Lot of alternative versions in different languages add interest to an already interesting compilation. Highly, highly recommended.
