Book Description

5 Dec 2011
In Schematics: A Love Story, author Julian Hibbard meditates on love and memory by virtue of connecting and disconnecting to schematic diagrams. Every spread pairs a quietly unfolding, enigmatic narrative with a visually arresting schematic diagram. Whether illustrating simplistic dance steps or charting chemical decomposition, the illustrations and text play off one another, reminding readers that what might look simple at first glance is in fact complex. As readers try to reconcile how the images and text work together, they will find themselves more and more engaged with the puzzle, discovering new possible meanings. Schematics is a sparse and poignant illustrated fiction that questions whether or not love and memory can fit into schematic diagrams. The book will also include an index that explains the original schematic diagrams, which adds another layer of intrigue to this short but memorable fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Schematics 14 Feb 2012
Format:Hardcover
This is one of the most profound books I've ever read despite the lack of words. On first sight it seems simple but intriguing, each page has a diagram on the left and matching poetry on the right. Through three acts Hibbard creates a narrative using these juxtaposed schematics which explores attachment, attraction, resistance, confusion and probably most evidently love.
I can't do this justice, but to me its beauty lies its relating of abstract human emotions to very real, physical truths and the resulting mimesis. I often find that art can be elaborated by words, and likewise literature supplemented by visuals, thus 'Schematics' is a perfect balance.
The actual book is rather clunky imagewrapped paperboard, pretty much resembling a brick-shaped children's picture book - complete with rounded edges - although the form oddly compliments its stark quality. It would make an interesting coffee table book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Book 14 May 2013

The book was by a photographer that I am a fan of; but, the project was a departure from his photography, It is well put together and an affordable addition to my library, The format is similar to his book "The Noir A-Z" in which definitions are compared to an image, except in the case of Schematics, diagrams take the place of photographs and poems takes the place of definitions.
5.0 out of 5 stars A visual poem 17 April 2013

Read a page...think it through. This is a book to have somewhere where you will be enticed to open it as you pass, to any page, and let that thought wander around your head for awhile. A great inspiration starter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Schematics 1 Feb 2012
By Nicholas - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Quirky, poetic, full of intrigue, and well-documented, Schematics: A Love Story is more of a photo album than a book. Each page has a schematic on the left side and a sentence or two on the right. The pages are thick paperboard. At the back is a description of each diagram and what it means. I'm sure that the text is full of connections to the schematic drawings, but I haven't had it long enough to look at it carefully.
