Book Description

Schaum's Outline of Probability and Statistics, 2/e is an introduction to calculus-based statistics and probability, covering all the topics in statistics and probability courses directed to mathematics, natural-science, and engineering students. Probability theory supplies a methodology through which statistics can be used to draw conclusions on the basis of analysis of data like sampling theory, and prediction or forecasting. Since the text is calculus-based, it is above the level of elementary probability and statistics courses taken by a general college audience. It assumes a general familiarity with the subject matter, is geared mostly toward students in engineering or science majors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent statistics college level finals training program., 20 Aug 1996
By A Customer
As with all Schaum Outlines series, this is an excellent book for every college/univserity degree level student facing the statistics finals. Over 800 pages long, hundreds of examples, covering descriptive and inductive methods at length , together with the vital mathematical theory give the reader the background needed to pass any statistics finals. I used this when learning for mine, and it worked out great.

2.0 out of 5 stars poor explantion....could be better, 26 Mar 2007

The downfall of this particular text is the extent at which particular knowledge is assumed. This text fails to explain thoroughly some important concepts and i would suggest that you opt for something called 'understanding statistics' by oxford university press. That book takes a different approach, by placing questions into context and written explanation takes up the majority of the book. Overall this book is good as a 'refresher' but those starting a statistics course will find this hard to follow. How long will it take before people realise that you cant learn just from worked examples?
While im on this criticizing streak i might as well talk about the flimsy, cheap quality of the schaum books. Why is it that the pages are so thin and tear soo easily?

1.0 out of 5 stars Very poor Explanation, 5 Nov 2008
By Chuka Udeze (Aberdeen, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is full of Statistical calculation problems and some worked examples without adequate or deeper Theoretical explanation of the concepts, hence making it difficult to use as a beginer, I would prefer Statistics and Probability for Engineers and Scientist by Hayter especially if you are an Engineering or Science Student, however if you are already well grounded in Advanced statistics and probability and looking for some problems to solve, it might be useful, for me, it's not. I recommend using it in conjuction with another book that will explain the concepts better
