I already have the German Phrasebook (Collins Gem) (German Edition) and wasn't sure if this would be worth having except that I was attracted by the series, having enjoyed the advantages of Schaum's Outline of Italian Grammar, Third Edition (Schaum's Outline Series). Sadly, the Schaum's German Grammar isn't out for the Kindle yet and this book really isn't a Grammar book.

Yet, it is more than a phrase book - it certainly introduces far more detailed phrases than you would normally get in a phrase book, but the book is actually a teaching tool with the (useful) vocabulary and phrases being introduced in the best way to make them memorable and supported with well thought-out exercises and pictures. There are plenty of tips which are up to date and relevant of things you'd need to know when in Germany and I found myself remembering the phrases and words it introduced.

I wouldn't recommend this to someone who had only just started to learn German - it assumes a certain basic knowledge, but if you are traveling to Germany you will certainly find it useful and if you want to increase your general vocabulary at the same time, this is a painless way of doing it.

Helpful 10 Feb 2010

Bought this in the Kindle edition. Would recommened purchasing a hardcopy instead. It required you to flip back and forth, and write in the blanks. The phrases are nice to read though, but don't expect a word for word translation... you need to have some background in the language in order to benefit from this book.
