The most thorough of all the teaching grammars that I have used. It works through every aspect of every verb, pronoun etc with literally hundreds of exercises. The chapter on verbs has 343 exercises!!! No excuse here for not knowing your agreement of past particples. Then answers ARE in the back. One aspect I found helpful is that there are mixed exercises at the end of each chapter which test what you have learned in an authentic way. It is quite easy to get things right on one small topic taken at one time but less so with mixed examples. The explanations go into the more obscure points of usage and the exercises draw out small oddities which might go unobserved. Recommended highly.

Inital thoughts on this book were that it seemed rather stark and clinical in it's delivery on the concepts of French grammar. There are no pretty pictures or interesting facts to entertain. However, I found it to be invaluable when it came to practicing the various concepts of the French language. There are just hundreds of practice exercises which is exactly what you need when learning a new language.

If you have already started a French course using either a book/CD or have enrolled on an evening course then this offers a vast array of additional practice exercises to re-enforce what you have learnt. I wouldn't recommend this book on it's own to learn French as you would soon lose interest but if used in conjunction with a French course it is highly recommended.

I came across this book after learning English grammar on my teacher training course, and realising that learning the grammar is essential to learning a new language. So I tried a couple of books to that end, including Grammaire en clair, which is great in it's own way....but this! If you don't mind doing loads of writing to practice all the forms then this could be for you. It'll teach you a point and then give you a lot of practice to drill it into you. Exactly what I want, that's how I learn best anyway. My French has improved massively since starting this book, and I don't think i'm a quarter of the way through. Obviously, you'll need to supplement it with other things to break up the potential for tedium, but a useful tool nonetheless.

Good book for the beginners
This book is good for the beginners, but it would have been ideal if it includes a audio with pronunciation. Because ponunciation plays important role in French language.
