5.0 out of 5 stars Schaum 22 Aug 2009
By Doc Barbara TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The most thorough of all the teaching grammars that I have used. It works through every aspect of every verb, pronoun etc with literally hundreds of exercises. The chapter on verbs has 343 exercises!!! No excuse here for not knowing your agreement of past particples. Then answers ARE in the back. One aspect I found helpful is that there are mixed exercises at the end of each chapter which test what you have learned in an authentic way. It is quite easy to get things right on one small topic taken at one time but less so with mixed examples. The explanations go into the more obscure points of usage and the exercises draw out small oddities which might go unobserved. Recommended highly.

1.0 out of 5 stars Schaum's Grammar (Kindle) 6 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Please disregard the glowing references above. These refer to the paperback edition of this book, which is indeed a comprehensive and detailed treatment of French grammar and is well worthy of an excellent recommendation.

I am reviewing the Kindle edition and I wish I could give it zero stars but that option is not available. On my first read through I have found literally hundreds of transcription errors and have probably missed many more. Accented words in original are especially fraught with errors. For example francçais for français, tàt for tôt, arriveé for arriveé, also anything ending in an e acute (é)tends to concatenate with the following word rendering a giberrish string. Once a transcription error is initiated it is perpetuated throughout the book.

The book is a bizarre mixture of plain text and text captured as poor quality graphic images. The image text is very small in relation to the plain text and does not automatically scale when the text is scaled, although the images can be scaled manually. As mentioned in the reviews above there are hundreds of excellent exercises with answers provided. The problem is that the answers are not hyperlinked from the exercises themselves making finding the anwers at the end of the book an onerous process.

The transcribers of this book should hang their heads in shame for such sloppy work as should Amazon for offering it for sale.

If Amazon read these reviews and I doubt if they do, then they should withdraw it from sale until corrections are made. I am seriously considering taking this product to Trading Standards (UK) for prosecution under the Sale of Goods Act (1979) as being "not of mechantable quality".

Depending on your proficiency with French this download could be very confusing, if not downright damaging.

If you would like to buy this excellent book then buy the paperback and steer clear of this toxic Kindle download.

4.0 out of 5 stars A useful addition for practicing French grammar. 20 Dec 2009
By Doh
Format:Paperback
Inital thoughts on this book were that it seemed rather stark and clinical in it's delivery on the concepts of French grammar. There are no pretty pictures or interesting facts to entertain. However, I found it to be invaluable when it came to practicing the various concepts of the French language. There are just hundreds of practice exercises which is exactly what you need when learning a new language.

If you have already started a French course using either a book/CD or have enrolled on an evening course then this offers a vast array of additional practice exercises to re-enforce what you have learnt. I wouldn't recommend this book on it's own to learn French as you would soon lose interest but if used in conjunction with a French course it is highly recommended.
