Confused by basic electricity concepts? Problem solved

Schaum's Outline of Basic Electricity covers the fundamentals of electricity and electric circuits. Written as a complement to vocational and technical courses, the book reviews digital and computer technology and the more advanced level of expertise required of technicians in these fields. Chapters focus on particular subjects as they are related to electric circuits, so you can target specific areas or tackle the subject as a whole. You will also learn how to solve circuit values in more complex series and parallel circuits.

I can recommend it to anybody who studies electricity or just want to get a more complex and detailed knowledge of general electricity. I prepare for an electrician test and this book was just that I needed. Excellent book.

Explains the things I was dodgy on to more depth than my college course and is easy to understand. A good reference book for revision etc. Could have done with a few more examples and more detailed explanation of Kirchoff's Law. That was the only minus

I can only hope that all of the mistakes in the second edition (published 2007) have been corrected. The section which deals with electromagnetism has more blunders than I can count!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book on the basics for electronics technicians 3 Mar 2007
By calvinnme - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a good book for electronics technicians who want to cover the basics of electricity that they would need in their assembly and test work. The table of contents is not shown for this book so I do that next. An asterisk indicates an entirely new chapter from the previous edition:

1. The Nature of Electricity

2. Electrical Standards and Conventions

3. Ohm's Law and Power

4. Direct-Current Series Circuits

5. Direct-Current Parallel Circuits

6. Batteries

7. Kirchoff's Laws

8. Determinant Solutions for DC Networks*

9. Network Calculations

10. Magnetism and Electromagnetism

11. Direct-Current Generators and Motors

12. Principles of Alternating Current

13. Inductance, Inductive Reactance, and Inductive Circuits

14. Capacitance, Capacitive Reactance, and Capacitive Circuits

15. Single-Phase Circuits

16. Alternating-Current Generators and Motors

17. Complex Numbers and Complex Impedence for Series AC Circuits*

18. AC Circuit Analysis with Complex Numbers*

19. Transformers

20. Three-Phase Systems

21. Series and Parallel Resonance

22. Waveforms and Time Constants

This second edition is 140 pages longer than the first, and emphasizes more circuit analysis and calculations than the previous edition, although it is still too simplistic for engineers. This new emphasis on mathematics is probably due to the fact that the electronics technician no longer just wires boards together as was done in 1983. There is much less hardware construction and more emphasis on design in the field today.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not that basic if Algebra & Trigonometry are assumed 9 Jun 2010
By Victor L. Nazaire - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Basic Electricity , Second Edition , 2007 by Milton Gussow
seems a solid text : more than 700 problems solved step-by-step with
more than 1,100 diagrams .

BUT what is said ONLY in the Preface and I quote :
" Knowledge of basic ALGEBRA & TRIGONOMETRY is assumed "

So, don't go buying or reading this text if your Trigonometry
skills are not up to par.

So, go and study this text first : Schaum's Basic Mathematics with
Applications to Science and Technology by Haym Kruglak

Schaum's Outline of Basic Mathematics with Applications to Science and Technology (Schaum's)

BEFORE reading Basic Electricity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Basic Electricity, Schaum's Outlines 4 May 2012
By Colorado - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This will most likely be THE best money you'll ever spend for a high quality refresher on basic electricity. The author, Milton Gussow, does an absolutely outstanding job covering the fundamentals with enough detail and clarity to make this a definite "go to" reference manual for the electrician, the technician, or the field engineer.

Rather than listing the topics, I strongly suggest all potential buyers utilize the "Search inside this book" application. Reading through the Table of Contents will give you a good feel for the subject matter and how it is laid out. A cursory read of the those portions of text that are provided in the search application will give you a good understanding as to how the author clearly and concisely presents each subject. And, reading through the Index gives ample reference to those topics you most likely would want to look up on the spur of the moment.

I highly recommend this is book!

excellent review if you have taken electrical course long ago and require refresher. Would also be a good supplement to a beginer's text.
