5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Overview 19 Aug. 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This work provides a clear and comprehensive overview of Greek scepticism, from the beginnings of epistemology with Xenophanes (c.570-475 BCE), to the final full development of Pyrrhonism as presented in the works of Sextus Empiricus (c.160-210 CE).

Also of interest may be Sextus Empiricus: Outlines of Scepticism (Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy). Outlines of Scepticism is a work of major importance for the history of Greek philosophy. It is the fullest extant account of ancient scepticism, and it is also one of our most copious sources of information about the other Hellenistic philosophies. Also of interest may be The Modes of Scepticism: Ancient Texts and Modern Interpretations.

For a contemporary work on scepticism Barry Stroud's The Significance of Philosophical Scepticism is worth a look.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent broad overview in a historial context 6 April 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
These are the real skeptics. Forget silly paranormal refuters who have coopted the name. It is a decent outline of the ancient philosophers who have doubted. A good introduction, but read the primary texts
