Product Description

The narrator of the Scepticism Inc. was made on the 3rd of November 2022 in an industrial estate on the outskirts of Chelmsford. After the three weeks of his childhood he's sent to work in a ShopALot store.

He's a supermarket trolly, and he believes in God.

In the church next door he meets Edgar Malroy, soon to be the richest man in the world.

Edgar runs a betting shop that only takes bets on metaphysical propositions and consequently he never has to pay out.

But Edgar has a tragic flaw: he's in love with Sophia Alderson, who, in addition to being ridiculously beautiful, thinks she's a messenger from God...

Scepticicm Inc is a sublime satire on the lunacies of organised religion, a heartbreaking story of a doomed love and a novel boiling over with inventiveness and crazy humour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious 20 May 2013

First read this very funny take on the ludicrousness of 'faith' in the modern era over a decade ago & the memory has always stayed with me, so it definitely has something in originality & humour. No idea about Vonnegut but seems a bit of dud comparison, even for style, what's totally new anyway? Would be good if atheistic reasoning like this could be as compulsory for religious education as the tedious religions!

Shame he isn't wider known, so even with it's faults the kindle version is a blessing (made it much easier to get hold of again).

'The Astrological Diary of God' is even better & (vastly) funnier, even if dissecting that particular irrationality is a bit like shooting fish in a barrel - well worth reading & hopefully will be out on kindle sooner rather than later.

3.0 out of 5 stars Review of the Kindle version 26 Mar 2013

It's not a 3, not a 4. It's 3.5.

I'd like to first address the Vonnegut comparison because I bought Scepticism Inc. for that reason. Of course Fowler isn't Vonnegut, and I feel like a jerk for selecting this book to satisfy my longing for impossible new Vonnegut stories.

I'm sorry, Bo.
I'm sorry, Kurt.

Overall, I enjoyed the book. The first third of the book was difficult to get through. The pace and flow just didn't work for me, but there was a shift after that--either I finally got into it or it picked up.

The story is absurd enough to be effective and funny, but the fluidity and likability of the narrator fluctuated. Because of the nature and trajectory of the storyline, the narration needs to be seamless for the book to be outstanding, which is why I think it's between 3 and 4 stars.

I liked Scepticism Inc. enough to buy The Philosophy of Stars, also by Fowler, which I must note, so far, is smoothly narrated.

If you're bothered by typos and formatting issues, the ebook has some of both. But at less than a $1, there isn't any room to invest in polishing and perfecting.

First I bought this book as a gift to a friend as the printed version is out-of-print and the shipping cost of used copies are at least as high as the second-hand book itself in the excellent quality group.

Later I bought the e-book.for myself too after I have returned the paperback I borrowed from a colleague. So now I also have some first-hand experience of the book. This electronic format, as the price suggests, does not have anything fancy: no table of contents. You have only three options in the 'go to' menu: cover, beginning, and location (which is the kindle equivalent of page numbers).

So if you have not read the book yet, I can encourage you buy this e-book and read it. But do not forgrt to add bookmarks as you go on so that later you could find the places you especially liked.
4.0 out of 5 stars Under-rated, inteligent and funny. 26 Nov 2012

I read this more than ten years ago, and I thought it was great fun. I bought it now as a gift, and started re-reading it, it is still fun. Light, easy reading, funny and inteligent with some great ideas, Bo Fowler is an underrated author. If you are into stuff like The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, you'll probably like this.
