Product Description

Product Description
When Celia Lyttleton visits a bespoke perfumers, one of only a handful in London, she enters the heady and exotic world of scent. From a London backstreet she is transported to a world made up of thousands of oils, unguents and balms, all hidden away in an old Chinese medicine chest. And so begins a remarkable quest to discover the origin, history and culture of the many ingredients that make up Celia's unique, custom-made perfume. It is a quest that will take her from Tuscany to Morocco, from Sri Lanka to Tibet, from the peasants and farmers growing their own crops and the traders who sell to the perfume houses, to the 'noses' who create the scents and the marketing kings involved in this billion dollar industry. As Celia explores the mythology, history and culture behind ingredients such as Jasmine, Nutmeg, Musk and Ambergris, she paints a vivid portrait of this mysterious, sensual world, conjuring up the people she has met and the places she has visited on her Scent Trail.

From the Inside Flap
When Celia Lyttelton visited a bespoke perfumers, it was to realize a long-held ambition: to have a scent created solely for her. Entering this heady, exotic world of oils, extracts and essences, she was transported from a leafy square in London to a place of long-forgotten memories and sensory experiences. And once drawn into this world, she felt compelled to trace the origins, history and culture of the many ingredients that made up her unique perfume…

And so began a magical journey of discovery that took Celia from Grasse, the cradle of perfumery, in search of spicy-scented mimosa, to the citrus groves of Morocco and the sweet-smelling neroli oil; from the rose-growing region of Isparta in Turkey, where five tons of petals are harvested to make just one litre of rose oil, to Italy and the iris which grows on the rugged Tuscan hills.

After journeying to Sri Lanka and India, the home of the heavenly scented jasmine and saffron crocus, Celia continued to the Yemen in search of frankincense and myrrh, and on to Socotra, once described as the ‘Island of Bliss’. Here she traced ambergris, possibly the rarest and most mysterious agent in perfumery, which is found in the bellies of whales and is said to have powerful aphrodisiac qualities.

From the peasants and farmers growing their own crops, and the traders who sell to the perfume houses, to the ‘noses’ who create the scents and the marketing kings who rule this powerful, billion-dollar industry, Celia Lyttelton paints a colourful panorama of sights, sounds and aromas. It is a mystical, sensual landscape that vividly conjures up the extraordinary people and places she has encountered on her unique scent trail. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

2.0 out of 5 stars High hopes...but the writing is a let-down, 7 Aug 2007
By W. Seager (London, UK) - See all my reviews

I had very high hopes for this book - I find the topic of exotic spices, flowers and other natural products fascinating. The author clearly does too, but the book is seriously let down by what is, frankly, very poor writing. The world described would seem like fertile ground for exotic prose, but barely a page went by when I didn't cringe at the clunky style. Furthermore, describing smells requires a rare knack that Lyttelton, unfortunately, really does not seem to have. A book I have on herbs and spices manages to describe smells with extraordinary precision, concision and perception. This one does not. Finally, it has been badly let down by sloppy proof-reading. Nearly every one of the French terms and phrases in the first two chapters is embarrassingly misspelt. This is a real shame - the book could have been fantastic.

3.0 out of 5 stars A curate's egg, 20 Feb 2008

I enjoyed this book. A great concept and a tale of a personal journey. But, like other reviewers, I found many, many, many howling technical mistakes. The book would have benefitted from a proof read by a perfume professional. But cut away that (these are only technicalities after all) and its still a good and enjoyable read. I'd still buy it! And I DO recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good perfume book, but with errors., 22 Jul 2007
By Prince Barry (North of England) - See all my reviews
I just can't resist buying any new book that I discover about perfume. This one is not a disapointment.

Celia has a good grasp of the subject and I am sure that she would prove to be a very popular member of the good perfume forums that are on the 'net'.

She starts off the book with talking about her bespoke perfume and then travels around the perfume world to discover the places where the main notes of her perfume are created/grown etc. She goes into detail about the history of the various ingredients before writing about her fabulous adventures in the particualr countries.

A number of critisisms about the book is that she refers to Ormonde Jayne in London as Jayne Ormonde, according to her Frederic Malle's grandfather was the founder of Christian Dior, when in actual fact it was the perfume division and that his mother created classic fragrances like Eau Sauvage. I'm sure the last statement will have Edmund Roudnitska turning in his grave. A number of perfume names have been quoted wrongly like Creed's Royal Scottish Lavender which she calls Royal Scotch Lavender. A bit more checking of accuracy would have been a good idea before the book went to print.
