From immense sounding distorted riffs to beautifully understated acoustic pieces to the soft piano piece at the end (helpfully titled 'Piano Song'), this album is an absolute classic.
The band, originally from California, relocated to London to record this album, due to apathy in the US music scene. In the early nineties, if you happened not to wear flannel shirts, come from a certain city in Washington and moan about how your drug habit was killing you, you apparently didn't stand a chance of getting signed.
Fiction records took a chance on the band and they recorded this savagely alluring record for them. Despite touring round the Uk and Europe, and releasing another criminally underrated album (One Last Laugh in a Place of Dying), they failed to receive the recognition they deserved. Tragically, bass player Jimmy Fernandez died of a brain haemorrhage whilst recording the second album.
Stand out tracks are:
'The Blind Man' - which starts of as a melancholy acoustic guitar piece, rising with a lovely bridge and then giving way to a huge, repeated riff which has echoes of Metallica at their pummeling best;
'Purity' - another emotional rollercoaster, with the initial acoustic intro augmented by a beautiful cello, then obliterated by another driving beast of a riff which takes the song all the way to its conclusion
'The Piano Song' - Utterly beautiful piano piece which ends the album. Simple piano which sinks a hook into your brain and will not let you go - you will have this in your mind for weeks after you first hear it.
Put simply, this is a monumental album from a fantastically talented trio of individuals. Buy it, Listen to it, and spread the word. If you are a connoisseur of emotionally stimulating music, then quite simply this is one album you should not be without.

The band, a trio, all hailed from California ,though most were resident in the U.K. and there is no doubt that there is an epic global sweep about the music on this album. The music isn't just based around colossal rock riffs, though there is thrillingly plenty of that , but encompasses a surprising range of stylistic nuances .There are strings, clarinet, choral inserts and the titular piano song which is not too surprisingly is a tender piano led ballad.
The pan-global feel of this album comes from the use of the mercurial Voix De Bulgares on the momentous "Home", a song with a memorable ascending riff and the chant by Catherine Gifford on "Desert Song "but also seems to be infused into the music's DNA. The strings on "Purity " and the clarinet on "Seven " add a certain exotic frisson too. The vocals by Robin Proper-Sheppard are utterly committed , delivered with a severity that matches the often stentorian chords and thumping percussion.
Scenes From a Second Storey is no longer widely available on CD but it's one of those great rock albums ( along with most of American Music Clubs back catalogue) that should be re-issued with undue haste. It's a great example ,along with CodeinesFrigid Stars or Slints, Spiderland , of a rock album that offers a fresh vital take on a genre always on the brink of stagnation . It rocks alright but in about seven hundred different directions.
