This is just too good from Twisted Funk, covering a wide spectrum of electronic flavas. Quality control all the way with all killer no filler. The very cream of broken nu beatz,d&b and a sublime Detroit techno inspired beauty in Nu Era's Drum Ensemble. I love my Detroit collection and have some real classics and this is right up there with the best. Well done and total respect to Mark(4 Hero). Don't sleep on this.

good stuff 30 May 2003

A good selection of music that i've kept returning to. For me the track by Sonar Circle is one of the best i've heard in a long time, with a sophisticated beat and dirty bass coupled with atmospheric vocals and nice synth touches over the top. Some of the other tracks are more uptempo with a touch more D&B flavour that are equally as listenable. All in all I'd say its a fairly sophisticated selection akin to some of the stuff on Hospital that I'm glad to have purchased.

Scattered Snares is a project from Marc Mac of 4 Hero and Reinforced Records fame. Not sure what the motivation behind this compilation on new label Twisted funk was, but who cares when it's this good? Consisting of tracks spanning the range from hip hop to drum 'n' bass to broken beat to house to techno, stand-outs include Hopper's 'Feel Free', which is drum 'n' bass of the most polyrhythmic sort - drum patterns morphing, snares adding punctuation in unexpected places, spacey atmospherics providing depth. Torus' 'Space' is at a drum and bass tempo, but comes across more like speeded-up soul jazz, with uplifting female vocals, tight drum patterns, and pounding bass. Two words sum up Bug Nyne's 'Broken Rhode' - mind blowing. The beat is ultra-fat fortified electronic funk - broken beat in it's dirtiest form, with keys providing a touch of melody. Think Public Enemy meets Photek meets Domu meets Elvin Jones, and you'll be getting close. Even the James Brown-esque sampled 'uuh's sound great - hairs-standing-on-end material! Nubian Mindz' 'Burning' is rave music given the broken beats treatment, with a source riddim indebted to dancehall, massive bass, and powerful female vocals - a guaranteed dancefloor destroyer. Cold Mission's 'D H Shuffle' is another dancefloor stormer, with a funkily urgent b-line supplemented by jazzy keys and finger-clicking accompaniment - somewhat remeniscent of Mr. Scruff's 'Shrimp'. If you want an album which is at the bleeding edge of electronic funk, buy this one.
