In their past releases there was a pounding, almost tribal, sound to their music, which made them stand out from other heavy metal bands. With the new drummer, Vinnie Signorelli, however, this is lost for a more traditional heavy metal sound.
Another slight disappointment for me is the guitarist/singer Chris Spencer's vocals. While there is nothing particularly wrong with them, he doesn't use a very wide vocal range, so they are a bit monotonous, and there is little emotion in them.
It is just as well, then, that the music itself is good. While I don't think much of his vocals, Spencer is a talented guitarist, and the songs are well crafted. The band use other instruments as well, making for some more interesting tracks, such as the mouth organ intro to the second track, "Alleged".
The album is well worth a look and, while it's not an essential purchase, it really grows on you the more you listen to it. You could definitely do worse than buy this. For the more trademark Unsane sound, though, you should look towards getting one of their earlier albums.
