Review

This fascinating disc spans the centuries by coupling medieval masterworks with modern works inspired by them. The four male voices of the Orlando Consort bring vigour and tonal variety to Machaut's Messe de Notre Dame, and its tenor Mark Dobell gives a lilting account of the composer's song Douce dame jolie. Tarik O'Regan's Virelai on the same tune then makes playful, contrapuntal use of its melodies.

His Scattered Rhymes, inspired by the Mass, pairs the Consort in medieval English poetry with Paul Hillier's choir in texts by Petrarch: a vivid meditation on earthly and divine love.

The Consort's perceptive accounts of Du Fay's Ave Regina celorum and Gavin Bryars's Super flumina complete the picture. --Matthew Rye, Daily Telegraph, 10th May 2008

Even if it wasn t now possible to kit yourself out with a genuine SACD player and some surprisingly effective multichannel headphones for around £150, it would be worth investing in the format just to collect the Harmonia Mundi SACDs produced by Robina Young, one of the format s most committed advocates. This is a typically unfaultable example, even if the stirring together of early and contemporary compositions within the accommodating aesthetic of choral music is now routine.

That said, this collection has actually been programmed with considerable care. Machaut s glorious Messe de Nostre Dame forms its centre, both in terms of its musical substance and its famously provocative rhythmic and harmonic structure. Immediately preceding this is one of two pieces by the highly prodigious Tarik O Regan, Scattered Rhymes, partly derived from elements of the piece which follows it. O Regan explains this in an alarmingly composerly fashion in the excellent booklet notes, but the results are sprightly and arresting. The Bryars, Super flumina, is also derived from deliberately fragmented material, both textual and musical, providing an interesting allegory of the narrative it depicts. The remainder of the programme is equally compelling, with the acoustic of the recording venue (Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh) effectively becoming an additional element in the performance.
(performance ***** sound *****) --Roger Thomas, BBC Music Magazine,June 2008

The male vocal quartet, the Orlando Consort, and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir share a commitment to the same repertoires - the very old and the very new. The earliest and latest pieces on this collaborative CD are separated by about 650 years, Guillaume de Machaut's Messe de Notre Dame, probably written in the 1360s, and works by the British composers Gavin Bryars and Tarik O'Regan in the twenty-first century. The programs notes include a wonderful story from the 1930s, in which an audience member told the conductor after a performance of the Machaut Mass, "We don't want to hear dodecaphonic music, we want to hear old music." For ears accustomed only to music as early as the Baroque, Machaut's unfamiliar harmonies, voice leading and cadences can sound exceedingly odd. For anyone willing, Machaut's music can transport the listener to a very different world, a culture which we might find had very little in common with our own, and that kind of experience can be bracing. The performance of the Machaut, by the Orlando Consort, with bass Robert Macdonald, is exceptionally tonally pure and intimate; the recording sounds like the five singers are standing in a tight circle around the listener. While it's very unlike the experience of the listener of Machaut's time, who probably would have heard the singing from a distance, across a vast, highly resonant space, it's an ideal way for modern listeners to experience the details of the music and the nuanced performance. Guillaume Dufay, who lived a hundred years after Machaut is represented by the motet, Ave Regina celorum, and the popular virelai, Douce dame jolie, sung here unaccompanied by tenor Mark Dobell, a refreshingly straightforward account that contrasts with the frequently tarted-up performances using choruses and instrumental ensembles. Tarik O'Regan takes the Machaut as the basis for a contrapuntally complex and somewhat manic but exhilarating setting for five voices. His Scattered Rhymes is based on fragments from the Machaut Mass, and like polyglot Renaissance motets, use texts in several languages, with the Orlando Consort singing lines from Petrarch in Italian, and with the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir singing English love poetry from the same era. O'Regan has a genuinely original voice; his music is based on an almost incomprehensibly complex layering of polyrhythms, creating a relentlessly driving momentum, but it's also immediately engaging and friendly, inviting the listener to let go and allow him or herself be immersed in the visceral, sensual experience. Born in 1978, O'Regan is definitely a young composer to watch out for. The performances throughout are absolutely stellar, astonishing in their rhythmic precision, unwavering intonation and interpretive bravura. The sound of Harmonia Mundi's SACD is comparably fine, with excellent clarity and balance. --Stephen Eddins, allmusic

I'm a big fan of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir/Paul Hillier and bought this 'on spec' as I trust them to always bring out a quality release, especially on Harmonia Mundi, with its record for strong production.

However, I was very pleasantly surprised by the unexpected momentum and blend of sounds here, where they are paired with the superlative masters of early music, the Orlando Consort, in Tarik O'Regan's title-piece 'Scattered Rhymes'. It's hard to put into words, but there's an intrinsic drive to O'Regan's 'Scattered Rhymes' that seems to have evaded most recent choral releases and contemporary music in general.

The Machaut Mass is given a very crisp performance here, which I think adds beautifully to the more mellifluous interpretations already available on disc.

Anyway, it's quite an amazing disc. Certainly unique and worth buying just to have this little 'journey' in your hands!

Phenomenal 16 July 2010
Format:Audio CD
Having performed 'Scattered Rhymes' with the Orlando Consort in their 2007 tour, it is wonderful to be able to hear the piece again, and being performed so brilliantly.

The music itself is not only satisfyingly intricate, but it is also extremely enjoyable, indeed quite easy, to listen to, even for those not familiar with contemporary classical/choral music. O'Regan has written a piece that not only satisfies the most ardent aficionado for contemporary music, but also is engaging to the novice listener. Further, the piece fits wonderfully with its companion work, the Machaut 'Messe de Nostre Dame', evoking similar harmonic and textural soundscapes without sounding like a simple pastiche. Bravo!

The performers themselves are brilliant, with the Orlando Consort displaying a huge amount of energy and precision in their tackling of the 'Scattered Rhymes' semi-chorus parts, while in the Machaut they display all the interpretive expertise for which they are (rightly) famed.
The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir under Hillier provide a wonderfully performed foundation to the OC's singing, particularly in 'Scattered Rhymes', with full control of dynamic contrast, light, shade, without losing any of the necessary rhythmic drive.

All in all, this CD is a must-have for anyone interested in good music, choral music or music in general!

Stunning and exhilarating! 18 April 2008

Wow! I guarantee most people will not have heard a disc like this before. The Machaut is sublime, gritty, unexpected and just excellently performed here by the Orlando Consort.

However it's Tarik O'Regan's 'Scattered Rhymes', which opens the disc that will blow you away. For one thing it's FAST, something which most new choral music is not. For this piece, the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir (Paul Hillier) joins the Orlando Consort and the effect is mesmerizing. I think it feels like a concerto for the Consort, where the soloists get to show off their virtuosic mastery against the rich sound of the Estonians.

I repeat: you will not have heard anything like this before!

Wonderful performance of sublime music. Deeply moving Du Fay. 7 Sep 2010
By Y.P. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This CD contains a mix of medieval/early renaissance music and those composed in this new millennium by O'Regan and Bryars. The previous reviewer has eloquently lauded the new, thus I will mainly comment on "the old".

This is Orlando Consort's first recording of Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame. It's surprising that the group waited for so long to record this mass which should have been the "bread-and-butter" of its repertoire. Perhaps, the path has been treaded by almost every distinguished vocal consort specializing in the medieval music, they wanted to make sure that they had something new to say before walking into the recording studio. The result? Stunning!

However, it is the single Du Fay track, the tenor motet "Ave Regina Caelorum", which I wish to put in a few more words. I can not resist the comparison of this with Ockeghem's lament of Binchois "Mort, tu ...." in Orlando Consort's another CD Ockeghem: Missa de plus en plus & chansons.(*) For me these must be 2 of the most deeply-moving pieces of music ever composed. I don't think anyone, not even the most analytical listener, can "stay cool" when listening to this motet. When the music reaches the inserted trope "Miserere miserere supplicanti Dufay...",(**) I am sure you will be, as I have been, swept away. Here the great Du Fay, when faced with the Death, showed us his most tender and vulnerable emotion. In fact, Du Fay asked this motet to be performed at his deathbed. It's a very personal piece for him.

Even if you do not pay attention to the paired imitations and the rhythmic integration of the 4 parts, the natural pacing of the musical flow is unmistakable. If you read the scores (or if you are a superior listener who can reconstruct the score in your head while listening), you will realize that the music unfolds so naturally only because it is so well planned. Here Du Fay put all he had into this seven minutes of music: supreme knowledge of the compositional techniques and life long performing experience of the emotive capacity of the music.

The performance of this motet is, as far as I can tell, perfection itself: sung passionately with perfect voice balance. (I admit that my unsophisticated ears prefer it over the excellent renditions in In Memoria and in Flos Florum.) This track alone is worth the price of this SACD, which by the way has very good multi-channel sound.

Most highly recommended.
