The Fray - Scars and Stories

Biography

Biographyby Andrew Leahey

By pitching their music somewhere between the arena-friendly style of U2 and the mature pop/rock of bands like Maroon 5 and Counting Crows, the Fray rose to commercial prominence with their 2005 debut, How to Save a Life. The Denver-based band had formed three years prior, when former schoolmates Isaac Slade (vocals, piano) and Joe King (guitar, vocals) unexpectedly bumped… Read more in Amazon's The Fray Store

Product Description

CD Description

Critically acclaimed, platinum selling US rockers The Fray return with a brand new single "Heartbeat" taken from their third album Scars and Stories. Scars & Stories leads with “Heartbeat,” of which lead-singer Isaac Slade notes, “That song came out of a period of my life when I was trying hard to be open to whatever came my way. I traveled through South Africa and Rwanda with a buddy, and at first it was really hard to stay open in the face of so much pain and heartache. But then I ended up meeting so many cool and inspiring people, and all these ideas for lyrics and melodies just started rushing in.” The inspiration specifically came from a chance meeting with an expatriate woman. Speaking of the miracle of the capital city overcoming such remarkable odds, the two held hands and Slade reveals “I felt so connected to her. I couldn’t tell if it was her pulse or mine.”
The album was recorded at the legendary Blackbird Studios in Nashville. The Fray was able to hone their sound with the help of producer Brendan O’Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, and Neil Young). On the new recording, the band transforms their real life experiences into a collection of songs that are reflective, but still maintain a pop sensibility. The making of Scars and Stories fostered the most evolution the band has ever experienced, both lyrically and musically. “On our first record, we didn’t quite trust ourselves yet,” says Slade. “We loosened up on the second album, but there was still some element of restraint. But on this one, we just stepped up to plate and swung as hard as we could.”

Unsurprisingly this is a much awaited and utterly outstanding contribution to music yet again by The Fray. This album is a sublime and emotional piece of work that was so worth the wait. They just keep getting better and better, well done boys!

Solid 21 Mar 2012
By Syriat TOP 1000 REVIEWER

The Fray have the kind of radio friendly rock music that should sell by the ton. In the past, on their first album in particular, this has been the case. However, their music doesn't seem to quite get the attention it used to. Maybe its because it does sound like other things and maybe its because it doesn't stand out enough. Scars and Stories continues that trend. Its good, but not memorable. It lacks the killer single of their first album. And whilst you enjoy it whilst it is on there are no real moments you just want to stick on repeat.

Highlights here include Heartbeat, Munich and The Fighter. These are tracks with the sound of a tight band and some good rhythm. But it doesn't quite catch their previous highlights. Sure its heartfelt but not quite emotive enough.

This album is the sound of a band that is trying to move you and doesn't quite do it. There is enough here to really enjoy, but nothing to totally fall in love with.
