I'm converted to Scarpa having worn allsorts over the last 40 years

The shape of the boot suits me, that might be the length of time Scarpa leaves their boots on the last, or just luck.

Very comfortable within a couple of days of wearing. Very strong, feel like I could kick through a brick wall no bother.

The lace cleats & rollers really help, not just a gimmick as I thought before wearing.

No worries about the quality of materials used or the construction.

Plenty of toe room while snuggly holding my forefoot, the full length tongue is great.

I'm thrilled with them and glad I put the boat out over the usual Meindl et al

Not worried about no goretex lining, less sweaty and goretex has let me down in the past as once that lining breaks down you're goosed.

Not sure about insoles yet, the provided fibre and foam insole is great for feeling cool under the foot, but provides little arch support and no heel pad. After market Orthosoles and the like give the support but feel hot and get smelly ! Will keep looking for the ideal insole for these and just stay with the Scarpa one for now.

I have written 'reassuring' as my title to this review, a strange term to describe a walking boot but I'll explain:

When fording a stream it is reassuring to know that once committed your foot won't just slide away as soon as you put any weight on it.

When contouring a steep slope it is reassuring when the sole of your boot bites positively into the surface and your ankle sits well supported.

When climbing down a gully it is reassuring that you can place your feet with precision and confidence and know that if you test your footing and it feels safe then you can proceed without issue.

When walking on wet/icy ground it is reassuring to know that you won't be wasting energy losing your footing every few steps or suffering the extra drain on your energy the increased concentration you need causes when this keeps happening.

When wet conditions are encountered it is reassuring to know that your feet will remain dry due to the quality of the leather and construction of your boots and not because you are relying on a Gore Tex liner which although good, is nowhere near as breathable and sweat resistant as the liner in these SL Activ's.

When on long walks it is reassuring to know that your feet will be comfortable and supported all day long and that the boot you are wearing feels like part of your foot, not, like some, feel like you have a plaster cast on, or to the other extreme, a pair of Sunday market trainers.(Nothing against Sunday market trainers but they ain't any good for hill and mountain!)

I could go on but I would just be repeating what the other positive reviews have already said.

The Scarpa SL Activ then: 'reassuring', an unusal description but like the boot it refers to, it does the job perfectly.

I bought these to replace an ageing pair of Scarpa Attaks that had seen better days and were starting to leak.

The first impression is that these boots are extremely solid - the ankle cuff is relatively high and heavily padded, so when donned and laced up, these feel almost like ski boots in the way that they grip your foot. It feels as if these will take whatever punishment gets thrown at them.

The tongue and upper are one single piece of leather, so there are no seams to leak. There's been some slight creasing across the toe bend - which is where my Attaks finally gave way - but the leather seems thick enough to withstand this for the long term. There's also an extra layer of rubber extending up the sides, which make the leather much more abrasion-resistant.

The sole is stiff, but somewhat flexible - you wouldn't want to spend all your time on tarmac wearing these, but you're not going to break an ankle scrambling over scree. The sole tread doesn't seem to clog with mud in the way that past Vibram soles have, either.

I got into the habit of not lacing the last two sets of eyelets of my old pair - the same lacing on these Activs left my heel lifting slightly, despite the padding at the back of the boot, so these are a lace-all-the-way-to-the-top style. That said, my foot doesn't slip around at all once fully laced. The rollers and cleats make adjusting the lacing very easy.

I've got a fairly broad foot, and these don't feel tight. Apparently there is a wide fitting version of this style, but I can't see that being much use unless you've got feet the size of a hobbit.

They haven't needed any significant breaking-in - a couple of dog walks on level ground, and I'd be happy to walk these up a fell.

Overall, I'm very pleased with these. YMMV, but I was able to save about £50 off the current Amazon price with a bit of online shopping around.

I really like these boots. They are my third pair of walking boots in the last few years :

First I bought a cheap pair of boots (£40 or so) which weren't that comfortable or very waterproof.

Second I bought a more expensive pair of boots (£100 or so) which were much better - but I wasn't completely happy with them and I was curious if the top end Scarpa boots would be even better

So finally I bought the Scarpa SL Active boots. They look great - and feel really comfortable being worn. They feel really solid - ie they aren't a lightweight boot - but I find that a good thing. Most importantly for me - they come fairly high up the ankle and provide a lot of support there.

They seem to be completely waterproof - I was walking through a lot of melting snow and streams with no problems.

They aren't cheap - but if you want really good boots there are what you need.
